I just got a 2001 S40. It only came with one key, and no remote fob.

Did all S40 models come with remote central locking? My car does have the little plastic dome in the corner of the speaker grill on top of the dashboard - is this a remote sensor, or is there some other way to check if my car has a remote function?

If it does have it - which remote fob should I get? There's a few different types on eBay that all claim to be ok for the S40. Some have two buttons, some three and some four.
I am assuming Volvo will be able to re-programme a used key-fob... Is that right?

 From what I've read in these post the last couple of years in reference
to ignition keys and remotes I believe it best to let the Volvo dealer cut you a additional key and buy the remote (s) directly....May cost you a bit more but if something happens Volvo will back up there work..(This is rather hard to to on e-bay)..Plus the dealer has to reprogram the complete system. anyway...
I had the same thing done when I first purchased my Volvo (The selling dealer lost a set (key and remote), so they paid to have this done...About $265.00....
Good luck

Hi,
My 1996 V40 came with just one key and one remote fob. All S40 & V40 models did come with remote key fobs. I only ever use the key as the remote fob is too unreliable even with new batteries.
I bought two used remote fobs from e-bay and approached a main dealer to programme both of them, which they were unable to do as they were the 'incorrect type', even though they were advertised on e-bay as suitable. I believe that there are many types out there, plus the dealer didn't want to put their name to a second hand item?
I was quoted around £75 for a new remote fob from Volvo and £35 for a new key,(not fob!) from a local branch of Timpsons. The key has an immobiliser within it, hence the high price for the key alone.
Let's just hope I don't lose my one and only set!
Good Luck.

I have a pre-owned S40 (I am the 3rd Owner). The car came with 2 keys and 2 remote. One set of key + remote works. The other set doesn't. However, the key that doesn't work can nontheless turn on the electronics etc, but not the engine.

I have read advice about going to the dealer and get the key recoded etc, but the problem is that I live in rural Queensland AUstralia, and the nearest service centre is 600kms away....... I am seriously thinking of going there, but I need to take a couple of days off (I am even thinking of taking the family along to visit the city on the way). But it works me up thinking that I have to go through all the trouble just to get a key done??

So my question is, how do I get the key done up? And no, I did not receive any sort of code etc when I first got the car. I have a local car dealer with a keyduplicating service told me that Volvo and Land Rovers were the only two rare key types that can only be recoded by the authroised service centre. 'Outsiders' have no way of doing it even if you have the code + key. I tend to believe this after reading most of the forum responses. But I am so desperate to want somebody to prove me wrong...

Thanks and much obliged if someone can get back to me. Cheers from Qld.
