just think, the lower the octane the less bang it will have ...

random fact ... if you can find a low enough octane rated petrol ... you can run it in a diesel car ... low octane - less likely to spark ignite, more likely to compression ignite.

Syko is right- Besides the detergents and such you're buying higher octane gas to avoid detonation.

Contrary to to what I used to think, Gasoline doesn't explode in an engine, it burns. (although VERY quickly).

When it explodes, you have detonation. This is that clackety-clack noise that diesel engines make.

So to agree- Turbo = high-octane gas.

To argue with my own point- it is possible to run lower octane in a turbo car, however you will have to keep the poor thing off boost for the entire tank!

When the turbo spools up, the timing advances, and the detonating death begins.

Most modern car have a knock sensor that retards the timing when it detects detonation, just reducing performance, and saving the engine.

To finish rambling, the only time I'd run 87 in my turbo would be a long highway trip where I'd be sure to drive as boringly as possible.

But where's the fun in that!?!?

are you taking into account the intake temperatures, the intercooler can only cool to about 2 or 3 degree's above outside air temperature, not forgetting the heat soak onto the pipework under the hood ....

Forget any practical reasons!!!

The idea of keeping off boost for an entire tank of fuel is enough to make me wanna hide under the bed!

So does the idea of burnt and cracked engine bits...

If anyone catches me putting in "the cheap stuff", each of you has permission to hit me with a brick.

(Previous offer only applies to the fueling of an S60R, NOT the 240, which does just fine on 87)

of course it makes a difference, your feeling it are you not? It wont be as sluggish off the line, it will idle smoother, run cleaner, you'll also see a slight increase in mpg too thats if you aint driving like an italian... nothing against that btw, i love it ... screaming past down the high street at 6000rpms all good!

ooh, I'm running 87 octane in my 86' volvo...the price of gas these days...$1.35/litre of gas for 87 octane, 92 would be like $.149. Crazy prices these days, I'll try filling up with 92 next time, I hope I notice a difference.

the highest we have here in Canada is 92 octane, 103 would be amazing! I could always buy those octane boosters I suppose.

Gas was about $0.80 here as well, and has shot up to $1.35 over the past 2 years. Crazy I know...stupid American gas companies
