Can somebody explain the benefit of this to me? IPD went so far as to put a 5 minute video on their site promoting their "short ram intake" system, but that same video shows a 5 degree increase in air temperature. They claim the shorter intake path causes boost to come on "about 400 rpm's sooner". What does 400 rpm's do for you in the real world, compared to a 5 degree increase in intake temp?

this is why I am trying to devise a closed box that is only open in the front much like the stock box but for the open element filter. look at the other thread I posted we have been talking about. The higher degree temp is usually while you are idling at a light or somewhere when you get up to speed that will go away quickly. The thread is called Heat Shield.

Are you referring to the normal Volvo 850 cold air intake that slots into an aperture adjacent to the top of the radiator runs along the back of the engine and terminates in the bottom of the air filter box or some type of add-on item like those advertised by performance shops?

while this topic has been around, opinions vary as to the benefits. some have just drilled holes in the under side of the stock aribox, meaning more cool air is introduced to the filter. while others have had an induction setup installed. now granted, the temp is going to go up, it is open afterall, but as the benefit of a shorter boost wait, that is the benefit right there. as xpiece posted, the increase tends to be more while the car is stationary, since the air is going to rise to the hood level and straight into the open filter. but as the car is moving and cold air is increasing, the temps should go down. try drilling the holes first, being the cheapest and easiest way, see if there is a difference to you. some, like i said, swear by it, others don't.

Let me add to this.I did this mod on monday I think and today is thursday. I read once that the motronic ecu is adaptable to changes in the car but it takes a few days for it to catch up with the small ones. (those guys who designed it are geniuses) Anyway, the car feels even more powerful than it did that first day I did this mod. Even today it was 88 + degrees and I would still feel the increase. Anything over 40 mph is very noticeable and I am thrilled for the moment. I am also considering putting in more holes on the bottom, maybe not just in the lower part (you would have to look inside of it to know what I mean but also along the higher ridges in it ans on the outside facing the fender. Let me know what you think Harry. Also, would it be going too far to cut the whole bottom off of it as close as I can get to the bottom, then put in a piece of metal mesh much like people put in their grills to hold out the larger stuff? It would still be nice and flush with the metal underneath and not too much heat could get in there since heat does rise. I think it would produce the noise I am looking for. One more thing, I ask about where would I route the aluminum hose on the backside of the air box if I did go open element filter.

hey piece, where does this metal hose go to? i think if you were to cut out the bottom, it might weaken the whole box, not sure,though? it is a good idea. maybe if you were to make a big X, you know, just cut out big triangles and leave a bit of bracing on the bottom. even with the holes, i think if you were to bore them out so that you had 4 big holes with some material in between them would keep the strength and give you more air. not sure about the sides, since the box has a kind of seal around it, it might need to be pressurized, like a motorcycles airbox and if you were to open the sides you might lose this pressure. again, not sure. but if you think about it, how would the air be filtered if you were to drill the sides and the filter is on the top, not the sides?

I mean on the sides on the bottom portion of the box below the filter if you want me to draw a picture I could to make my point better. The metal hose staring at the front of the car is on the back left side and it goes down towards the exhaust I THINK. it almost looks like an exhaust for the air box it mounts right next to the intake part of it but behind it. Also, I think your idea of not cutting out the whole bottom is a bit better I was even thinking of even just half of the bottom, but I will consider the triangles idea. How would you start the cut down into it? It doesn't have to look pretty but not crappy either.

well with the hole already there, i would use a jigsaw and just cut huge circles. or get one of those round hole saw bits that you use to drill out the hole in your front door for the lock. about 2 inches around. and now i get you about the sides. duuuuuuuuuuuuuh, on my part.
