Ok, called my local Volvo dealership today and found out the part I need for my 1995 Volvo 850 Wagon with the Yazaki cluster - talking about the trip computer that is.

The old part number is: 9148574
The new part number is: 9442047

I guess they are both interchangeable it's just that one was catalogued a while ago and the other was more recent. Apparently it's still "available" from Volvo but on backorder with no ETA. So that basically means that I could be waiting forever to get one and it''s just a matter of time until they discontinue it anyway - plus the entire kit (which is part #9166689) is $459.67 - so that's not really going to happen.

So I guess i'll have to keep my eye out for that part number.... which is probably going to be a PITA.

Anyone sellin'? Or know of a place that is likely to have one?

I've got a local wrecking yard that has about a dozen 850's. I can check and see if they have whatever it is you need, but....what is it you need? You need a part for the Yazaki cluster? What part? Whats a Yazaki? Should I say Gesundheit?

Err, Volvo 850 runs on 2 kinds of display meters. One is the VDO style, and the other is Yazaki.

i picked a trip computer up from eBay for $56 plus shipping. came with the switch, wire harness, and dash display. took apart the instrument panel and found the little green plug waiting for the unit, plugged in the switch and put it all back together. works good. took 2~3 hours to complete the install. works well.

be sure you get the correct part for your instrument panel. i bought the wrong one the first time around. it all fits in but the plugs/connectors are different. oops! :P

the MPG calculation isnt perfect but it is usually within 1MPG of my calculation.

good luck!

JESUS H!!

This is one of the worst projects i've taken on - problem is, you gotta take that damn cover on and off everytime.

So I found this one.... looks like it'll work, has the plugs I need.

(IMG:http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff101/TacklaNHL/volvotrip2.jpg)

Anyway... I put it in today... it plugged right in, I was stoked!

Put it all back together (actually, i'm getting pretty good, full disassembly and re-assembly took 1 hour combined).... and when I start the car it lights up, it shows all the side markers on the display (both sides of the trip display) but then they go away and i'm left with JUST THE CLOCK!

Ok... so I was afraid of this... I probably need an upgrade on my ECU.

Is this possible? Is it possible to find the part that I need for this? Is it one of those silver panels that locks into the box in the engine compartment? Maybe swap one of those out?

Or could it be I need a better wiring harness that runs through the dash? Is it possible to do this? Am I fighting a battle that cannot be won?

CRAP!! I'm so close to having this thing fully functioning.... I WANT THIS TRIP COMPUTER!

So I called the Volvo dealer today and talked with one of the techs.

He looked into it and called me back. Said....

1. All the 850's were indeed wired up for it.

2. Typically if the clock is working and nothing else, it means that the switch is bad, or has long gone out.

3. Usually when the switch goes out you'll see words like ERR or DISC, but if it's completely shot you might not see any of that.

So I might have been sold a bum switch. I've got another one from another trip computer that wouldn't fit in there - looks like the same switch though.

Standby... and i'll tear in there (AGAIN!) and change the switch out. We'll see if that does it.

Oh man, wouldn't that be nice.

Nope, didn't work.

Either there's a different problem or the switches i'm using are dead....i've tried it with 2 different wiring harnesses and switches.

Nothing but the clock.

Any ideas? Would you give up by now?

Did the same thing myself a while ago .. did you plug in the little temp sensor in it's connector under the hood??? You'll need that for it to work properly. The car is wired for it ..look near the battery

Cheers ...

GREAT job. But err, no i wont give up by now. Until and unless am VERY sure that the wiring harness is not there. But since it IS there, then there is no possibility that it wont work. So, keep on at it.

Try to disconnect and reconnect some of the switches. Also look at Max's suggestion, that may have a valid point.
