image three where the yellow ring is it looks like. Or another reference, its on the back side connected of the throttle hose piece that isnt flexable. you have to turn it a little to the left if I remember correctly then you can pull it out the flame trap piece is in there. If you dont know what the piece looks like you can do a search for it on google "volvo 850 flame trap" click images up in the corner.

Another thing, if yours still has the metal one in it, upgrade to the plastic one.

xpiece- okay....i wasn't sure if that was the piece, with my finger i was rubbing the bottom of it, it did feel like metal but to me, it also felt like a pcv valve. i remember seeing the one i had on my caprice, which was a no breaner to get it...man i miss my V8....sigh...anywho, if it is the metal one, it should be changed to a plastic one?
if it is changed or cleaner out, will this help in reducing and blue smoke coming out of the exhaust and oil consumption?
thanks

Cleaning it might be a temp fix you can get a kit on ebay from a guy for 15 bucks or so. Cleaning it will affect how well the crank case breaths which may help but I never experienced any smoking from my car so I havent had to trouble shoot it. Have you pulled any codes from your car yet?

Volvo replaced the metal one with the plastic apparently the metal was corroding and they would fall apart or something. Proved ineffective over time and the platic one worked better they changed them for their cars as far back as 75 I believe.

I got the little plastic piece from my dealer for something like 5 bucks and some change. Beyond that you really don't need much, do you? Clean out the hoses if need be, spray out the throttle body, put in the new flame trap, and you're good to go.
