I just wanted to know, because i have some smoke coming out of the engine, not sure if it's from the head gasket or if it's an exhaust manifold leak? it's white in color and usually spills out when the engine is idling and then you give it a quick shot of the throttle....I'm also getting an occasional puff of blue smoke at the exhaust on startup only...i don't have smoke coming out of the dipstick but there is some oil consumption happening....thanks
fabs
p.s the timing has been redone on the car not too long ago...only 176 000 km on the clock...thanks

Sounds like you blew the head gasket.

Out of where in the engine? if it's the dipstick tube it's fairly normal, it's just breathing a bit.

Assuming you are not leaking anywhere else, and everything is tight, then i think your internals need looking at as well.

hi guys, where there is no smoke coming out of the dipstick....the white smoke looks like it's coming out of the back side of the engine (pass side) between the top of the block and above(or maybe below) the heat shield protector of the manifold...i checked the oil and it feels a little bit gritty and a little sticks?? i'm not loosing any coolant though....can the thermostat not be working properly?

secondly i checked out 2 of the spark plugs (that had been changed not too long ago) and they looked amost brand new not really white (lean) but there is not even a brown tint to them? very odd can it be a blocked fuel filter?

as i mentioned the compression was okay, but i will check again tomorrow. if the compression is high and the piston rings are on the way out, would this have show in the compression test?

is there maybe an additive that can help to remove the sludge in the engine?thanks

no no lights are on in the dash.....although, seeing as it's a 95 model is this OBD1 or OBD2? does it have 1 or 2 oxygen sensors (one before and after) the cat? if there would be a problem then it would light up...right?

Not a blocked fuel filter. Im stumped but it seems like you have a blown head gasket or valve gasket. Maybe sticking valves....

Maybe one of those oil additives I cant think of the name but its comes in a silver can with a peel back lid at Wal Mart. Or mystery oil. Then I would put in a healthy dose of chevron techron or lucas gas additive it is in a small bottle with a green lid, and see what that does for you. Some swear by slick 50 but I dont like it.

A product called SEAFOAM seems to get impressive reports. Why don't you have a look through the various Volvo forums to search out and read the relevant threads and user opinions regarding 'Seafoam'.

Most of the ones who have used 'Seafoam' (I guess there are even some on this forum) claim 'Seafoam' has really improved the running of their vehicle - some quite dramatically.

Personally, I have never used 'Seafoam' - simply because it is not sold in Australia.

If you could ascertain that, it could be a clogged oil line to the turbo, too. On the oil thing, i must ask, are you on schedule for the oil? If you're not losing coolant, then its OK.

A blocked fuel-filter would have caused all the five injectors to experience the same thing. Clogged injectors, however, could do this, though i cant say for sure yet.

I believe so, too.

I have used AutoRX on this. No other comments, cos i dont feel much of a difference. However, some people swear by it. I have a friend here who believes in it like 200%!!!

Hehe. Otherwise, Shell has a flushing oil that could be used also for this cause.

Fuel filter is under the car. Right under the passenger side rear seat. Do you know what it looks like? If not, its round with a hose going in one side then out the other. Change that annually.

The fuel filter looks like so. THe one with the black arrow.

The injector fuse is in a black box at the base of the front windshield.
The injector relay is above the radiator, the grey colored relay.

hey guys, i'm thinking that it may be the exhaust manifold as well... right now when i take off, the engine has a bit of a sputtering noise (exhaust sound)...as well i will try to take off the heat shield protector so i can take a look at the manifold and see if it's leaking from there...in terms of the smell, it smells like exhaust with a slight burning rubber smell...any hints? if it is an exhaust leak what symptoms would i get? low torque? spark plug color? lean/rich???thanks
