This is an ongoing thing and it has been in the garage a couple of times but they were unable to replicate the problem.

When driving along (only really noticable when the windows are open) there is a slight rattling noise that I can only describe as being similar to engine 'pinking'
However if you happpen to go over a slight bump a definite rattle seems to come fron the passenger side (possibly front and rear)
This sounds like something worn or lose but I haven't been able to get under for a look.

The other noise I get is a knocking noise over dips in the road or speed bumps/ramps - I went over one this morning and as the front wheels came off the ramp there was an awful sort of crunching noise but there is nothing visual to tell me where it is coming from.

This has to be bushes or engine mountings or ball joints or end links surely.

your knocking noise sounds like the stuts and or mounts. have them checked out. and pinking means... not sure about the terminology on this side of the pond.

pinking ... I believe it refers to pre-ignition - a sort of pinging/rattle that can be heard on acceleration (not so much a problem these days with electronic ignition etc.)

The strut/mounts would have been my guess but the garage says they have looked closely and driven the car several times and can find nothing wrong with them.
As the parts alone are quite expensive I would be reluctant to replace them unless someone could confirm they are failing.

if not suspension it has to be something attached. unless, like you posted, it's motor mounts. but if the mechs looked underneath , you think they would have looked anyway. as for pinging, what fuel are you using? what ron?

this kind of happened to me, when ever i was going over bumps it was a CRAZY sound, could pick it, took months for us to pull out the back tyres and realise that the sway bar mount and come out and was rubbing against varies parts of the car... might want to check that out
Volvo welding is not the best unfortunately....

Here's a link to the S80 forum about similar noise. In my case it was the right, rear strut that was replaced. You might do some other searches through the forum as there are several culprits for suspension rattles.

well if it's only coming from the front check bushings for front suspension too. I'm just fixing that problem.... Rear suspension bushings I've heard don't go bad nearly as quickly
