This morning I pulled the flame trap and associated hoses to clean them out. I also relocated the flame trap to set above the intake manifold next to the fuel rail, as in later models.

Step 1 was getting access. On the '86 the easiest way is to remove the idle air control motor (IAC). I didn't want to pull the intake manifold, although that is an option. There's really no way to get at the flame trap without removing something. At the lower end the IAC bracket is secured to the motor mount bracket with two bolts.

The old flame trap may have been original. It's the first time I've taken it apart. I doubt if my former mechanic cleaned it in at least 10 years. It appears to be a brass mesh insert. It was completely clogged up.

Here's a couple pix if I can get them uploaded. One shows the old clogged up flame trap. The other shows my relocated flame trap housing and hoses. Now I'll be able to check the flame trap in 5 minutes instead of an hour. It should improve the car's emissions and reduce crankcase pressure.
