I am going to definitely do a cone filter soon, but I want to make a custom heat shield... maybe. Im not that creative with auto's, but none the less I am smart so thats a start. I would like to make it fully enclosed on 4 or 5 sides like the one on this page for this bmw. http://members.dodo.com.au/~wawawa/ Click on "CIA" I want something similar to this anyway, are there any available to buy OR are there any pre made templates like on this page for our cars?

For the record, I was also told this will not give much performance gain but will change the sound of the car and that is what I am going for. Not looks otherwise I would go with one with an open top.

I think it was Eurosport for something, that does make a heat-shield for the air filter. But not as 'covered' as your bimmer friend there.

Yup. Eurosport has a setup just like that with open top.

A friend of mine just added the cone filter to where the air pipes begins next t the MAF sensor, and cable tied the cone to the existing air filter box while leaving the top open. Air still flows form the original pipes from the fron. Doesn't look very nice, but it does the job just as well.

If you do get it done, let us know how you did it dude! Sounds like a fun project!.

Thanks big daddy but that isnt how I really want to do it, though It might end up that way. I want to go the heat shield route, I want as much air ramming into it as possible without it looking sloppy.

I thought so (that you'd want it covered fully). And that's a good idea anyway, cos hot air will not find its way into the air dam.

If that's what you want, cant your present "working-party" customise it? Or were you just looking for the exact measurements already?

I dunno what you mean by working party but I was looking for measurements. My dad is a steel worker and he could weld one together for me or at least cut it and I could rivet it together.

I was even thinking, hmmmm what if I could move the battery to where the air box sits and put the filter down in that front corner of the engine bay... I could use that whole corner and since I plan on a pain job I could get a trim piece that would fit on the outside of the fender to feed more air. Im just brain storming out loud here. I want something unique. Working on one for the bimmer too, it already sounds like it belongs on the Nürburgring. This is going to be so much fun, kinda waiting on some funds too btw.

hey piece, first thing, the filter is not going to give you like a million horse. it'll allow the engine to breathe better. when you do mods to the engine, yes there will be a bump in horses, but as stock , the effect is minor, i still would do it. second, if you have looked at bears garage pics, he drilled holes in the bottom of his air box, since the air is drawn in from the bottom. theoretically, it will give you a ram-like effect since there isn't a convoluted path to the filter. so you could just get the k & n airbox filter, drill some holes and still get the benefit of more air flow. if you have looke at mine, i had the plate drilled with a hole so that i could get a hose to the radiator for more airflow. the bottom is still open for the stock air box, so there is airflow from there. i guess if i covered it i would get less hot air, but also, it is metal so the metal will still get hot and being closed on top, the heat has no where to go but to the top of the box and still be sucked in to the filter. on the impala, you see that my filters are pointing down into the under car airflow. great on cool air, lousy if i drive in the rain. :grin: just my two cents. if i was to do it again, i would try like you suggested, by moving the battery, maybe to the trunk for better weight distribution that way i would have that whole area in front of the filter for a ram air effect.

I agree with Greek.

Plus, even with the drilled air holes from the bottom, i still suck hot air in, but as long as water can drop out easier, i just have to live with it.

The idea of your sounds do able. I like it.

hmmm.. drill out the bottom of the airbox, and connect a hose as an additional inlet for air? Good idea, and I've seen someone do it. He had a drop in K&N air filter i it too.

Question is, where do I direct the aditional hose so that I could get the most cold air into the pipes without possibility of water coming in? It should be towards where the current air intake pipes are right?

Photos would definitely be good right now. Am having brain spasm. Can't think, just thinking of vegging out in front of the **** box after a hard days' work.

I know im not going to get a lot of horsepower. I mentioned that. I am going for the sound that it will produce greek. I like what bear did. I might do that until I have the cash to do what I am conjuring up. Bear which idea did you like? I tossed out a bunch. Also, what would I need to move my battery like that to the trunk or just back to where th air box is?

there are generic battery re-location kits. they sell them at napa. mine i got from pep boys. for the first one, i'd just drill out the bottom, like bears, and keep the stock filter, see if that improves your engines breathing and if it produces the sound that you want. if not, then go for the cone, since it will cost more than just drilling holes. plus, the holes will be there for the cone filter, less work. woooohooooo. and big daddy, look at my garage pics, there is one of my filter. just a simple hose drilled into the side of the airbox, you could even drill a hole on the corner for more room, run the pipe in that space between the battery and the rad and attack to the back of the rad. it is high enough and the rad would block out 99% of the water, whatever water does get through would probably be negligible to adversly affect the filter. wow, i'm using big words. :clap: i suddenly feel grown up. :grin: hey piece, if you aren't going to move it to the trunk, be it for monetary reasons, or the difficulty factor, swapping places with the aribox is more trouble than it is worth because of the ducts required for the airbox. they are right there, i think you would have to re-route everything and start cutting and splicing duct-lines. how about getting a smaller batter? like the optima that you were posting about. you could mount it sideways to the box, that would leave you with a bigger space to run a different box. wooooo, i just sprained my brain. beer time. hey where are my cigs? :beer:

I am definitely thinking of adding the extra holes as my current air intake pipes sometimes pop off during high speed runs like yesterday. Was trying out a ECU, suddenly felt a lag in speed. The car became harder to push above 180km/hour.

Check later and found the air intakes pop out, both the front and the one connected to the airbox. Just to safeguard myself, I think the extra holes are needed.

Anyways, it was a fun run, but I think my old ecu gave me a better performance.

I totally forgot about the battery relocation kit, that comes with the stainless steel box, and cables that run all the way to the back of the car (i.e boot or cargo bay!)

Greek is right, if you go that way, hey, you then have ALL the area in front for your air-dam. Dang thats huge.
