I just had to replace the fuel pump on my '94 850 (non turbo). A few days after replacing the pump, I started having rough engine running when I was starting from a traffic light, stop sign, etc. Sometimes it was rough and sometimes it was perfectly normal running when starting from a stop. Anyway the check engine light was on and when I had it checked out, it read mass air flow sensor. The mechanic cleaned the sensor, cleared the check engine light and the car did a little better for a few days. Yesterday I stopped and turned the engine off to go into a grocery (this was after a really rough start from a stop sign - engine almost died), and now the car will crank, run really roughly for maybe 15-20 seconds and then sputters to a dead stop. Are these symptoms something you would see from the MAF sensor being bad? Wanted to see if anyone else had any experience with the same thing before I spend over two hundred dollars for the MAFS. I have had this 850 for two years and LOVE IT. They are great cars! Thanks for any help.

Try disconnecting the MAF when the engine is running rough. If it really is bad, the engine will run smoother when disconnected. BTW, i reckon you have a lambda light on? Do the code confirm that its still the MAF sensor?

I have yet to change my MAF sensor, as i kept on cleaning and cleaning it, but i have seen a few instances where after a can of contact cleaners, the error still doesnt want to go away. After swapping the MAF with a working one, from another car, it runs OK. In that case, cant help it, dude. Have to change the MAF - the damage is more than just dirty contact points.

Cheers.

As stated in original post, the mechanic cleared the light after cleaning the mass flow air sensor, and the check engine light has not come back on. All the rough starts from a stopped position and now the engine only running for 20 seconds or so without sputtering to a dead stop are without any light coming on. I will try disconnecting the MAFS and crank and see (if it will run long enough to check) if it is running any smoother without the sensor connected. Thanks for the suggestion.

Well can't get the car to crank now. It turns over and almost catches but no cigar. Tried disconnecting the sensor and still no crank. It was running great until a few days ago. Not one problem. ??????????????????

When it was running though, there was no check engine light or any light showing (since mechanic cleared the light after cleaning the MAF sensor).

Be careful not to drain your battery out with all the cranking.
