The Driver side door does not lock. While all other doors operate normally, they all lock with the lock knob popping up and down when locking and unlocking. But the driver side lock knob does not lift when unlocking and when locked the door is still open while the other doors are locked. This is the same whether i use the key fob, the key or the unlock button on the door. Any ideas as to what the problem may be?

car is a 2000 Volvo V40 xs.

Thanks

Hi mppace,

Did you get the problem sorted? I'm new to this forum and have a similar issue - using the remote fob the knob goes down and appears to have locked, but still able to open the door. Locking with the key however is fine.

Hi,

Just thought I'd post the solution for this issue.

After a few hours of stripping the door, phoning dealers and specialists for advice I finally worked out what the problem is. The actuator (solenoid) that activates the lock gets jammed and stops moving the lock. Because it's jammed, it subsequently doesn't allow you to lock the door manually either! It's a sealed part so the only option is to replace it.

Phoned a couple of dealers and they'd never heard of the fault but from browsing a few forums it looks like it's happened to a few people, though noone has yet reported the fix!!

The dealer quoted £75 + vat for the part, so I got one off ebay from a 1996 model for £15!!

It's a bit long winded to explain in detail, but you basically need to get the lock mechanism out of the door (a bit fiddly with all the handle linkages) and separate the actuator (bottom bit where the remote locking wiring attaches) from the lock mechanism. The white actuator arm should move in and out about an inch or so. The one I removed only moved a couple of millimetres!

Replace the actuator and bingo! Just takes a bit of patience - leave yourself a day to do it.

Good luck!!

Dom
