HI,
My '91 volvo 460 turbo as been stopped for some time and i started to give it some use, but it has some problems:

1. in cold/wet days, when i start the car, it chokes and stop running, i have to press the gas pedal so it keeps runnig ( some times for 10 mins). After that period when i release the gas pedal the car enters (some times) in a state where the engine is working but at very very low rotations , so low that the car shakes, it also doesn't produce (almost) any sound. some times when i acelerate, the car "jumps back and forth";

2. the rev conter many times doesn't work, after some time it works in a intermittent way going up and down when the engine rotations are constant. some times it works well;

3. the abs light is on (do i have to take it to volvo's);

and that's it, as you can see the problem that bothers me most is the first one, if someone could help me.... :liebe011:

could be the oxygen sensor on the exhaust (lambda sensor), or it could be other sensors, bad connections on trhe ecu connector (would also explain the rev counter) or any of the sensors, also since it is a 91 you can read the error codes using the little black box with the LED near the front left suspension strut (just behind the air filter, theres a post somewhere here that tells you how. (that might also allow you to clear that ABS light too - if its not a constant fault)

Thank you very much for your help. But... i don't find the black box you told me about, shouldn it be here (see pic)? The only thing i see is that big box on the left but i think it is the alarm.
Also in the picture there is an arrow that points to a hole, i think it is there to hold something. is it possible that the car came withou it? or that ***** mechanic stole it? or am i searching in the wrong place?

Yes it should be round there somewhere, it might be mounted on the air filter casing though. its a blsack box about 2 " x 1" x 1 1/2" withe a red LED and a push button switch, a flying lead connects into one of the 6 sockets to read out the different information.

i'm sorry i took so long.
i can't find the box anywhere near.
also i don't think my car has oxigen sensor( 'cause i saw another 460 with the oxigen light in the dashboard, and mine does't have it)
oh and another thing, despite my car is from '91 the user book that came with it and the vadis (via vin) say that the car is from '92 :wacko:
any more ideas?

91 or 92 should have a sensor, all mine have , they dont however have a warning light to tell you the ecu is malfunctioning. which surprised a volvo dealer I contacted.

Hi, i haven't been here for a long time . anyway i went to the mechanic and he replaced some kind of electric device (he called that a valve) which controls the fuel flow based on the car temperature but, i don't think it works, it's amost the same.
when i start it( sometimes), the engine seems very irregular almost like some explosions aren't happening,so i have to press the gas pedal half the way so more fuel is injected and the engine stops doing that and go to high rpm.

Sounds to me like the idle control valve is dead! would suggest removing it and cleaning it out. also sounds like it could do with a good italian tune up, take the car out and give it a lil rant to clear the cobwebs. as for the abs, most likey a duff wheel sendsor somewhere.
