I have had a 1996 850 GLT for 3 years now. Bought it from the original owner, who maintained it at the dealership for all 9 years. We thought it would last much longer, but have had more trouble with it than we could have expected. We were also recently in a minor accident, which lowered the car's value even more. Right now we're purchasing a V70 and want to get as much as possible for the 850. Here's the list of current problems:

1. Engine: 1 cylinder with about 15% pressure - probably valve seals
2. Right front suspension: spring seats? - not sure; knocking sound started after hitting a bad pothole
3. Accident damage (needs replacing): front bumper, right front fender, right headlight assembly, hood, AC condenser.

I think that's it. The radiator was replaced just before the accident and wasn't damaged.

My question is about value: it's probably not going to be worth much more than $500 as a trade-in, but it hasn't been appraised yet. I know an independent Volvo shop that buys cars for parts, and I'm thinking that they'll pay me more than $500.

Can someone tell me if this sounds right or if I should be doing something different with this sadly dilapidated car?

Thanks,
Gerald

try donating it, sometimes you'll get more to write off on your taxes. slavation army, cars for the blind, etc your call. i would part it out in my yard and ebay it. if you have no room, then donation. you know the mech is going to take it apart and make 10 times what he pays you for it. so is the dealer.
