My wife and I are about to purchase a 2001 V70 T5 M with about 105k miles on it. The car looks almost perfect on the outside and I looked it over with a mechanic today and everything seemed in good shape -- no oil leaks, etc.

A lot of people seem to think that 99-01 V70s are sub-par. It also sounds like I'll have to replace the timing belt right away, since I don't think it has been. Any other impending repairs? Should we not purchase this car?

carfax, dude. see if the scheduled maintenance was taken care of since new. timing belt, right away, unless proven othewise, but i would do it anyway, piece of mind and all that. see what was done last. the obvious ones, oil, tune up, tires, brakes, etc. just make sure that you are on top of maintaining the volvo, they like that. if you don't, the volvos get pissed off. proper maintenance keeps them running for a long time. good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the quick reply. The Carfax is good - shows regular maintenance at dealerships, but no mention of timing belt. I'm buying the car from a dealer, so it has brand new tires, oil recently changed, and they're fixing minor things for free like the common fuel door problem, which it has.

I imagine the timing belt will run me $700-800, right?

see, if you can find a certified mechanic, try cartalk.com and plug in your zip, dealer is going to charge you around that much, outside mech, less than half. a lot less. either way, do it. good that it shows regualr maintenance, get a haynes manual, if poss, or a chiltons. start off slow, unless you have done work on cars, then just dive in. before you pick it up, have then do a code scan with you there, make sure nothing pops up. otherwise, good luck and congrats. we want pics, bro.

Hello There,I Also Purchased A 2001 V70 T5 Geartronic With 110,000th On The Clock,From A Local Auction Here in Scotland. This Model I Have Always Wanted,Got Rid Of A 2002 S60 20Ltr Tse,Since Then I Have Replaced,Here We Go,Front And Rear Brake Pads And Discs,Rear Shock Absorbers,Rear Heavy Duty Coil Springs,Front Wishbone Back And Front Bushes,Short Drive Shaft,Oil And Filter,Flushed Gearbox Twice,Now In The Process Of Replacing The Exhaust System As The Rear Box Is Flaking Away Below The Floor,And Its A One Piece System After The Cat.Take Note That The Plastic Coverings Surrounding The Spark Plug Coils Under The Cover Disintegrate With Heat/Age,I Removed Some From Headlight Looms At A Breakers Yard,Its Messy To Do When You Start,But Worth It In The End,Use Quality PVC Tape,Timing Belt Done At 76,000Th,But I'll Probably Change That Along With The Water Pump. After All That,I Don't Care,Its A Fantastic Car To Drive,With 250 B.H.P. On Tap,Its A Wolf In Sheeps Clothing.
