Hello All,

The usual symptoms that come from a v40 misfire. so i followed the advice you guys have given to others in the past. Though i must admit due to being skint i havent taken it to main dealer to get fault codes yet.

I got some champion eon2 spark plugs from halfrauds.

When i removed the existing plugs, i noticed that the one above the third cylinder was black, and a bit oily.

gapped the spark plugs as specified in the manual (0.25mm), put them in. cranked it up. Still misfiring.

So long as the gapping is correct, that leaves the ignition leads and coils. Apparently the cylinders fire 1-3-2-4 (according to manual) Could this be why car struggles when in low gears below 3000rpm?

In the meanwhile, the car is not being driven as I'm afraid of permanently buggering the engine.

Any suggestions? have I forgotten to do anything with regards to what I've done?

if can take to get a diagonist to make sure it a misfire on a certain cylinder.

but probably be a coil on it's way out. seems most misfires seem to come from them. best to change all of em if can or just the one its misfiring on. or your leads could be down.

hope helps

Thank you for your reply.

My engine only has 2 ignition coils. one for 1 and 3 t'other for 2 and 4.

I am very concerned about the oil on the spark plug. this could lead to very expensive problems. Or is it not as bad as I'm making out and a new coil/spark plugs could solve the problem?

I'll book in for a volvo diagnosis.

I have replaced both coils and the champion spark plugs for Volvo ones. Yet the misfire remains. however the car is noticeably faster than before.

Any ideas? Could it be the leads? Thats the only part of the ignition system i haven't replaced yet.

EDIT: I am now thinking that perhaps my pcv oil trap needs cleaning/replacing? how much do they usually go for?

RIP V40...my engine is buggered.

diagnostics said it was #3 injector. £40 labour, £40 diagnostics and £80 injector.
after the injector was replaced. car still had a misfire.

after another round with diagnostics, it said there was a fault with #3 cylinder. they did a compression test and it came back with a reading of zero!

apparently the valve has dropped. I'm no mechanic but even I realise that to fix that is a massive job. i was given a rough estimate of £600 to repair.

So I've paid £160 and the problem hasnt been solved. not too happy about that.

my main thinking is to just scrap the car. it has done alot of miles (180k). cars get old and they die.

another option is to get hold of another engine with lower mileage, and have that put in. the cost would be about the same as having the current engine repaired, but atleast this way the engine wouldnt be so worn.

suggestions? (but knowing what this site is like i wont get a response for 2 years!)
