I just bought a 2004 S40 for my daughter. It came with the standard switchblade
key fob. I have been reading posts about going to the dealer and paying from $200 up for another key fob. There are many listings on e-bay for OEM type key fobs. There are also original key fobs that some are selling. I realize the key has a chip in it and how all that works. My questions are:
1) can a regular type key with a chip be purchased that I and my wife can put on our key chains, not necessarly the switchblade fob, but just a key.
2) Can you buy someones key fob and have the switchblade part of the key replaced and cut to match my car and then have the fob reprogramed?
3) What is the best way to let my daughter have the key fob and my wife and I just have a reqular type key with the chip.
4) What are my alternatives?

Thanks for the information

What it comes down to is you are going to be better off going to the dealer for the keys. The ones you see on e-bay are a rip off because you are going to need to go to the dealer to get them cut and programed to work anyway.

You are right about the price though, my dealer mentioned a price of close to 200 each when i bought my car.

it all comes down to the key. if it was so easy to get a key, everybody would get a key from ebay, and since it needs to be coded, i could, theoretically code it for yours and drive off with your car. with items like that, better to get a dealer item, safer also. if it was so easy, we'd all be missing our volvos.

The guys are right. It's just better in this case to swallow, open up the wallet and go to the dealer.
