Roller mechanism seized. Either due to the belt's getting stuck or the rolling parts are giving way.

I had an experience once on this, but not in a Volvo. Tried to fix it, and worked for just a few weeks. Right in front of the cops, it wont release enough for me to secured by fat belly in. (You KNOW you can rely on Murphy's Law when you least want it to happen...)

Try rolling the belt in some more, and then slowly pull it outward.

X-Piece,
Yep.

ok removed anchoring bolt and fed in the seat belt slowly, the reel just eat it up and wont come back out now. it makes a locking noise when i pull it, as if i have pulled it too hard. should i take it off? would there be any use to taking it off, will i be able to wind belt back in once i get it off. or is it just completely locked up.
also where can i find a replacement belt?

thanks

Sean,

Because ours come with the pretensioner system, i am not comfy referring you to cheaper aftermarket products. Sorry, but i would be safer to get original.

Cheers, man.

Greek,
I just saw that movie with my son last weekend, he went like wacha-wacha and gave me a semi-blue eye... :(
Ooooh, i cant wait for him to add like 15 years into his age, and THEN i'll give him a wacha-wacha or two. HAHA. :haha:

hmmm so if i were to replace seatbelt, i would have to replace that silver canister thing too that has wires coming out, not just the reel? is it possible to replace just the reel?
is it possible to take off the passenger side belt and fit that to the driver side as a quick fix?

thanks sean

Thats part of the pre-tensioning system that i was talking about. If yours have not seized, and since they are separate units, ask your parts clerk if they can be sold separately.

well, as far as i can tell (and any of you could see by popping off the b-pillar) the pretensioner canister (cylindrical silver object) has a wire (non electric cable) running from it to the top of what i assume is the locking mech for the seat belt...this wire is not under tension, it has some slack in it, exactly as the other side, which is working, is. there is no deformation of the canister, i believe this means the pretensioner has not fired, and the problem is therefore with the retractor mech, can i remove this part from the pretensioner? if so how? any pictures?
i just cant see how they would come apart.

edit:

so in short:
is it possible to swap the belt over from the passenger side?
is it possible to just remove the belt reel, and not touch the pretensioner, by somehow disconecting the locking mech from the pretensioner.

Yes, i think you can swap the belt and the reel from the passenger side, to the driver side. But that's just by looking and imagining it in my mind. But i am not 100% sure, the screw hole or the whatever locks may still be a stumbling block (IF there are any) to your quest.

For your second question, i must say, I DO NOT KNOW.

Sorry, and thanks.

ok thanks.

i might try swaping them for now, my problem was that i just wanted to swap the belt, but it is connected to the pretensioner, so i will probably have remove and swap pretensioners too.

hmmm

sean
