I have a 2001 V70 T5 that has been sitting in a transmission shop for 1 month. They are at loss of what to do next. Rebuilt Transmission (gone over twice); rebuilt Valve Body; new Solenoids; Software upgraded. The intermittent problem is the car downshifts from 3rd to 2nd rough. It feels almost as if it misses 2nd and goes into 1st, but they see that is not the issue. Up shifts fine, and the downshift problem does not consistently occur. They have taken to Volvo dealer - who stated put in a new transmission; an exotic car dealership on the same street - much friendlier -cleared codes in software but at a loss; posted questions to some type of transmission user group - no answers; asked the company that rebuilt the valve body - no ideas. I would like my car back and the transmission shop, who is sticking to my original quote, would like to solve this as they are losing money at this point. Any thoughts?

I have the same car (80,000 miles) and the same problem! My independent shop (NM) thinks that I am on crack and can't seem to find any issues (because she doesn't show any codes, duh I could have told them that! OBDII).

Mine is shifting poorly both up and down in the middle rage (2-4th) but not all of the time.
The problem seemed to have started with the combination of the nuetral shift reprogram and the infamous warranty replacement of the master computer.

I have been driving it with this condition for about a year and don't know if it will be catastrophic or not... It seems to be worse during stop and go traffic and if it is warm outside...some shifts are incredibly hard and loud!
I've had the transmision fluid changed twice with no big improvement.
If I drive it fast (like intended I supose) it seems to shift better so that leads me to think that it is a computer or software problem...

HELP!

OK check this:

I just ordered one.

Also I'm going to replace the B4 cover myself (my shop refused to do it) it is a $25 part...

Thanks, I appreciate the links. It seems I am not alone with this problem. My car is at 86,000 miles.

I got the car back on Monday after the shop did an adjustment and everything seemed to work for about an hour. Problem is still intermittent, but was asked to drive it this week to see if the car gets better. If not fixed by Friday, then they will remove the valve body and send it back to the place that rebuilt it to test it. The shop is out of ideas.

How often should you check for computer upgrades? Only if there's a problem? Or at sched maint.?

I hear the ones with poly bushings gives a lot of vibration. Got mine with the soft rubber bushing from fcpgroton for $39.

I think the last software version was in 2004, since you have an 01, probably worth getting an update. $30 software, 1/2 labor at dealer. Figure close to $100.

OK, so here is my update:

1. replaced the piston cover (original was in fact not the problem) and no improvement. Installing it was a pain even with volvo's instructions. Took two people to compress the cover while getting the snap ring in.

2. received the IPD lower tranny mount with the blue poly bushing. OMG!!! yes there is a bit of vibration at start but it quickly goes away and I'm not kidding, it feels like a new car! Not only is the shifting problem gone. It is way more responsive and feels like every ounce of power is gooing to the wheels. The best $100.00 I've spent on the car!!!

I'm still going to get the shifting adaptation reprogrammed and change the tranny fluid again because I've read that it takes three changes to mostly replace all the fluid.

BUT HOLLY @%# did that new tranny mount make a HUGE difference! By the way the old one was torn almost in half.

What pisses me off is on one of my last visits to my shop they replaced all of the engine mounts but never mentioned the lower tranny mount. Needless to say I just sent them a very grumpy email.
