I bought a 2.4i litre 2008 V50 in Singapore in May 08. There is an audible and very irritating clicking sound every 3 or 4 seconds emanating from the dashboard on the driver's side of the car. The local dealer told me this is something they've never seen before, but they have now discovered that the clicking sound is found ON ALL 2008 S40s and V50s. It's got something to do with a pressure valve in the air-conditioning system. Pressure causes the valve to open and close, which causes the clicking sound.

I'm not very pleased about it, especially since the cost of the car in Singapore (with high taxes) is about 64,000 Euros. Given the tropical heat here, you can't really drive with no air-conditioning on (which, according to the local dealer, is the only way to get rid of the noise).

Has anyone else had this problem? The local dealer is telling me that it's a problem on all 2008 V50s / S40s. That may be the case here in Singapore, but what about where you live? Please let me know.

Sometimes by playing your favorite radio or cd may help to distract your attention away from noise.

i have a 2.4i 2008 v50 and have not heard any clicking sound on the drivers side... i have the ac on all the time... as im in texas and its 90degrees here everyday...


i will try and pay attention to see if i hear it... i have a rattling sound in my passenger side door but i dont think thats the same as yours....

Hi I have a 2006 2.0D V50 and have the annoying clicking sound every 3 or 4 seconds, especially noticeable in the first 10 mins of driving. I suspected that it was something to do with the aircon system and as the car is going in for its 2 year service shortly I'm going to ask the dealer to investigate. I'll post what I find out!

Albertofrog, After sending my local dealer a letter of demand, they have now offered to insulate the area behind the dashboard with a 3M product. I don't know how it will work out, but anyone else with a similar clicking problem might want to explore this with their dealer. My local dealer is not sure when, if ever, Volvo Sweden will find a solution to this themelves, as the car has been on the roads a while without too much complaint!

Interesting, I'll see what I find out. Perhaps some of the more traditional English Volvo drivers find the ticking sound soothing - reminiscent of a grandfather clock! :P

Personally I've been very pleased with the car overall, but the ticking is annoying after a while and sometimes makes its presence heard over the very good premium pro-logic sound system... :gitara:
