Hello. I had this 2005 2.5t awd for 2 months. Every time when the tank is at 1/4 and during turning or going uphill the car stalls. After that it starts right away. I get scared and run to the gas station. There are no error codes and the low fuel light is not even on yet!
Has anyone had this happen to them and any light shed on this will be appreciated!

The reason that this is happening is because the gas is "sloshing" to one side of the tank and the where the fuel pump "sucks" up the gas does not have any gas to suck up. Don't take such hard turns :)

Wy wife has had a similar problem. It has not happen going up hill, though she has it doesn't feel right. Her car has stalled on the freeway and the street. Gas was probably in 1/4 full level. Its at the dealer and they can't figure out anything. We're scared to drive it w/ 2 kids, if it shuts down the steering wheel and brakes, etc. stop working. any advice/help?

It could be a number of things... bad fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, something actually loose in the fuel tank, or a crimped fuel line somewhere. If the dealer can't figure it out I don't know. The only suggestion that I have is to not let the car get so low on gas, fill it up after a half of a tank. It is a standard rule with my fleet of XC90's that the employee fill it up when it reaches half of a tank or below. Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

mine is doing the same. Dealer is replacing fuel sending unit. Also possible wiring harness ran wrong with causes pressure on wires. They have seen once before

Stalling at 1/4 tank going uphill is not normal in any car, no matter how hard you drive.

After we were rear-ended our XC90 ran out of gas twice when the gauges showed fuel remaining and the computer showed 75 miles until empty. The first time we ran out of gas was before we got it into the shop for all the repairs and the second time was after it came out and was "fixed". Upon closer inspection the fuel tank and sensor were in fact damaged as a result of the accident, everything was replaced at the tune of about $1200 before labor.

Hopefully this fixes the problem (picking it up today actually), we'd never had an issue running out of gas and we let the vehicle get dangerously close to empty way too often.

I've just posted a topic about size of fuel tank which may be related to this. RAC told me last night that it is common for the lift pump in the fuel tank to pack up and not be able to pull up the last quarter tank of fuel and that it's not worth mending and therefore to not run under a quarter tank

If it is this and you didn't pull into the gas station you might break down as I did last night and then find there is no fuel supply to the engine but on putting fuel in and priming it it will start and be fine until it gets down to quarter tank again
