Hi! can anybody tell me why I can smell very strong gas fumes inside of my volvo, esp. when it's running? The fumes are about to choke me to death and I have a small baby that I don't want to be exposed to the fumes. My "check engine" light is also on. Anybody else have this issue? If so, what was the problem?
Thanks!
Al

fuel leak somewhere, check delivery hoses with motor running and filler hose from filler cap to tank. look for signs of moisture, even dust V lightly with White flour to show moisture. Flour won't hurt the motor if sucked into it. Expect worn or cracked old hose or loose clamp. NB overtightened clamps can cut the hose, weakening it and causing leaks-look at an recent repairs under bonnet-talk to last mechanic to see what he touched-he may have disturbed something. Check any new hoses too. Bad O rings on the injectors can leak, but it would run a bit rough then, I'd imagine. g'luck.

Also check the small diameter drain line that goes from the filler. It should go down through a hole in the bottom of the well behind the passenger's side rear wheel. If this doesn't go through the hole, fuel fumes will vent into the car.
The check engine light could mean a lot of things. It's telling you the emission system is not working correctly - could be anything from a bad oxygen sensor to somebody running the car without the fuel filler cap. You'll need to get someone to get the error code(s) before you can make any conclusions.
