I'm partial to the stock rims, but they look pretty good.

I have 2 things to mention, aside from your work looking nice.

1. If you changed to new rims, are you looking to sell the rims in your first picture? Those are the ones I have but mine are a little rough, and have been wanting to replace them.

2. I assume your new rims are aluminum alloy. Typically such rims come in either a polished or gloss finish. Polished is usually straight forward aluminum. Gloss usually has a clear coat anodizing on it.

Paint typically does not stick to aluminum very well and brake dust can do a number on it quickly, which is why they tend to do nothing, anodize or in some cases powdercoat the color on the wheels.

However, the way you have done it should allow you to easily touch it up should the paint begin to flake or erode away.

For the best bond you can get, I would suggest removing any anodizing that may have existed (if it did), priming with a good acid etching primer made for aluminum (Mathews makes a good acid etching primer), and then using your wheel paint on top of that. Possibly followed by a good clear hard coat to protect the paint itself. Granted the wheel paint is designed to try to keep the brake dust from eating into it, but it can only do so well.

I have painted some wheels previously on other vehicles with nearly the same type of paint (except mine were steel rims at the time), and it just didnt last long before it started to deteriorate.

Just keep an eye on it and and touch up as necessary if you dont want to go through the whole process again. On a side note, if you do use acid etching primer, do it outside or in a well ventilated room...that stuff stinks horrible and is not good for you to breathe.

I may sell the old ones not to sure yet. I may paint those as well and save them for spares since we have 2 850's now and soon will be looking for a wagon so we don't have to take 2 cars everywhere all the time.

If I decide to I will post on here.

BTW all the rims I painted had pretty bad curb rash but a vibrator sander with fine sandpaper fixed that right up.

Let me know how well that holds up. I like the color and am considering a job on mine as well as it would closely match the pain on the car now. Mine need work as well. They have a bunch of curb scratches I have to clean up too if I dont just replace them.

I have just fallen in LOVE with that colour. Gun-metal grey. Dark grey. Same thing.

Love it, man!
