:00000732: I am a new Member--just wanted to first say hi to everyone--my name is Erik--I bought a 1995 Volvo 940 back in January--doing a stock radio/cassette swap for a new alpine so I can use my IPOD--got the stock radio out no problem--the aftermarket wiring harnes--(two seperate plugs)--did not fit the plugs that were in the back of the stock unit--called the aftermarket support number--tech told me that I have to bypass factory amp--wiring harness would fit with the terminals going into amp?--could someone--anyone--please tell me where this amp is located--Would I have an easier time just hard wiring the stereo directly from scratch--Also--any type of info/diagrams labeling the 2 stock plugs wires would be deeply appriciated--thank you

I am just going off some info on a quick search, but here is what I have found so far:

Amp hould be located under the driver's side knee panel (under the dash), by the steering column. It wont be very large, about 2x6 and black and solver in color most likely. If the wiring harness you have is long enough it may reach, but chances are it may be too short like many of them.

What is the RMS power output per channel of your new head unit?
and
Do you know the power output of your OEM amplifier?

As for the wires themselves, I think the following should fit your car, so verify this before assuming this is correct (make sure all these colors exist, and test them preferably)

The wires behind the OEM head unit, should be a follows:
Brown/White - Left Dash Speaker (positive)
Brown - Left Dash Speaker (negative)
Grey/Red - Right Dash Speaker (positive)
Grey - Right Dash Speaker (negative)
Pink/Black - +12V Battery (Supplied from Fuse 26)
Orange - +12V Switched Power On (Supplied from fuse 14)
Black - Ground (may be two black wires, both are grounds)

At your Amplifier, should be the following wires:

Blue/Yellow - Left Front Door (positive)
White - Left Front Door (negative)
Grey/White - Right Front Door (positive)
Grey - Right Front Door (negative)
Yellow/Brown - Left Rear (positive)
Yellow/Grey - Left Rear (negative)
Green/Brown - Right Rear (positive)
Green - Right Rear (negative)

These wires you will need to use when bypassing the OEM amplifier

The following wires will also be present at the amplifier, but leave them alone as you will not need to use them. If you cut them you will have to cover or tape them up...best not to cut these wires, just leave them on the harness:

Black - Ground (there should be two of them)
Pink/Black - +12V Battery (there should be of these also)

Chances are your wiring harness will not reach the wires at the amplifier, so you will have to either extend the wires on your new wiring harness or just cut the wires at the amplifier (only the ones you need) and extend them to your new head unit. If you do cut the wires, I suggest leaving enough at the OEM harness so that you can reconnect them properly, should you want to sell the car and put the OEM system back in place.

Again, Check these colors against what you have. I have an 850, not a 940, and this information was found after doing a little searching over the net, so there is always the possibility that this may not directly fit the situation you have.

Also, if the above is correct then you have 6 speakers, and your head unit will most likely only power 4, unless you pair up speakers on a single channel. If you do this, make sure what your Speaker Ohm ratings are. Most likely they are 4 or 8 Ohm speakers, which will be ok. I would suggest parallel wiring the Dash and front door speakers on one channel (left dash and left door on left front channel, etc) and leaving the rear speakers on their own channel, unless you happen to have 8 speakers (2 pair in the back, which if you do, I do do not have the wire colors for the 2nd pair in the rear, but if it is like an 850, they used the same colors for both ets of rear speakers).

To parallel wire the from speakers you simply take the postive lead from one channel of the head unit to the positive connection on speaker #1 (dash for example) and the same wire to the positive connection on speaker #2 (door). Do the same for the negative lead from the head unit. If both speakers are 8 ohm then you will have a total of 4 ohms which is perfect for the head unit. If both are 4 ohm then you will have a 2 ohm load which should still be stable. Pairing up an 8 and 4 ohm speaker will produce just over a 2 ohm rating which again is fine. However if by some wierd chance either of those speakers are 2 ohm (i seriously doubt it) then do not parallel wire them together to one channel of your head unit or you could damage the amplifiers inside your new head unit.

Good luck :)

There was no factory amp in my Volvo. Installation of the aftermarket unit went very smoothly--Thanks again
