Need a little help prioritizing here or at least some idea of what to worry about more than others. My Volvo is doing a few things, so any help would be appreciated.

1. The odometer is stuck at 124, 806 miles, so what would be standard maintenance at this point in time? Can the odometer be fixed or jump started or am I just lucky to be stuck at this number?

2. The air conditioner is no longer putting out cool air. It used to go on and off, but now it is totally warm air. Coolant? Freon? Take it to the local service station and get AC service a recharge? My big fear is that it is just a few simple buttons that I haven't figured out because I haven't had the car for very long, and I am forever surprised at all of the things I am finding. I am guessing that the air conditioner should be the priority becaues the south is hot.

3. Brakes and tires: I have new breaks but the keep squeaking, and I have fairly new tires too with really good tread. For some reason, the driver's side rear tire has a leak or a slow leak. I have taken it back to the tire place at least three times, and they have done many times, but can't find anything wrong with it. It just loses air. The leak is still there, but it is slower, so it is just a given I have to put in my tires fairly often. The tire place said if this happened again, they would replace the tire, but it really is a good tire. Is that typical? I just moved to an opposite side of town, so could it be the drive? As for the breaks, they are fairly new, and I keep taking it back to them because they keep squealing. The smooth something down, and then I am good to go for awhile, but the squealing starts again. You can hear me coming.

4. Maintenance: What should I do at this point?

My big fear is that people try to take advantage of some girls, so I always like to have a little back ground information before I walk into some of these place.

Hi. Here's my 2 cents worth:
To fix the odometer will cost big $$$ and is not worth it.
Keep a log of gas consumption and estimate...

I would bring the car to a service center that specializes in Volvo for A/C service.

My guess is you have cheap "aftermarket" brake pads. Replace them with genuine Volvo pads. I use anti-squeal goop on the back of the pads before installation too.

Slow leak in tire is most likely where the bead is supposed to seal on the rim. Your tire guy should separate the tire from the rim and wire brush the wheel. Apply sealant and re-inflate.....

Make sure you change the oil and filter regularly. Timing belt should have been replaced at about 90,000 miles. Otherwise, if the car runs well and the belts and hoses are not cracked you should not need much. Oh, cleaning of throttle body is regular maintainance item too.

Generally the Odometer fix is cheap if you do it yourself. Typically it is cuased by the little gear in the odometer breaking a tooth off. You can get the gear online at alot of places, even regularly on ebay for about $12. Doing it yourself can take awhile, but isnt difficult if you take your time and make sure you follow the proper steps. You can also replace any burnt out bulbs in the dash panel also. If you don;t want to do it yourself, then yes it can be very expensive, all because of the time involved in doing it, the parts are cheap.

In replacing the brakes, do you still have the metal shims on the pads? These are usually there to help eliminate squeeking, although using quiet brake is also a good idea. If they are missing, then expect some squeeking.

Air leak, is most likely as was mentioned, a leak around the rim. Inspect your rim to make sure it isnt bent anywhere. It can also be due to a bad valve stem. Not all tire places will replace the valve stems, or charge extra for it, so if it hasnt been changed look there as well, or possibly even a bad fetzer valve or loose valve inside the tire stem.

A/C...potentially low on freon, possibly due to a leak. Have it checked at an A/C place. Most places can do a quick check for leaks, many do it for free. Make sure you dont have leaks before trying to recharge the system as it can get expensive is you have to recharge it several times. Volvo A/Cs must be recharged under a vacuum, so trying to just use a recharge cylinder from an auto parts store will just waste money.

blaky is correct, but it also might be your abs. is your abs light on? if so, your abs module is bad and it sometimes takes the speedo with it. change the module and the odometer will work. if your light is not on, just change the gear. also try fcpgroton.com for parts, real cheap. about the squeaking brakes, your rotors might be glazed. find an empty stretch of road go to the end and reverse quickly in a straight line, then slam on the brakes. do this several times, then stop and let the brakes cool off. have a cig, or two. that usually should take care of the glazing. as for the leak, it might be a bent rim on the inside. go to a different tire place. as for maintenance, what has been done, how many miles, condition, how long have you had it? we need that to tell you. generally, super tune-up and if you are over 100K, do the timing belt. unless there is a sticker under the hood telling you when the timing belt was done. good luck and keep us posted, please.

I use Napa brand pads. They are made my Ray Bestos and they do no squeek if you dont want to spend that much on pads just go to Napa and ask for ray bestos pads (not their cheap ones). Its always cool to have a girl in here who cars about their car make sure to come back we can always help you in some way. Im not looking forward to replacing bulbs behind the dash though I do have one or two out for atleast a year now :grin:
