Hey guys,

Soo im not really a mechanical guy im more of the sound equipment guy and sound guy but I have a really large question that I could use some help on to clear it up for me.

From what i have heard, it is almost a direct swap to swap out my N/A 2.4l with a 2.3l turbo, but unfortunatly i have not been able to confirm this nor have i been able to find a how too, or alteast a list of required items. I have read on some forums that it would be better to just get a turbo wagon, but i would really like to hold on to my volvo, and i would really like the project of swapping the engine. any info would be greatly appreciated. I am also looking for some help with a manual swap as well, anything would be great.

My car is a 96 GLT 850 N/A auto.

Thank you guys,
Derek

Sell your car and buy a turbo car. You have to very mechanically inclined to do what you speak of. It requires complete drive replacement and a lot of electrical work. Not really worth it when you can buy a turbo 850 for pretty cheap.

I am inclined to back Boost's opinion here. Chances are, finding a decent motor, along with all the extra things you will need will probably cost you 75%-100%+ of the cost of just buying the whole car. And that doesnt include any time or labor costs involved in swapping the engines.

Sure you might be able to find a really cheap turbo engine out there, but chances are it will be really cheap for a reason, with potential headaches later on, not to mention the extensive headache you may be putting yourself in for if you are not mechanically inclined to start with.

Havent done it myself, so take it for what it is worth, but if I were considering such a thing, I would be out looking at the used car lots for a turbo Volvo instead.

Doing such a swap can also possibly devalue your car to start with, depends on how you do it, whereas there are plenty of people out there that want the non-turbo cars.

yeah i know, but i wouldnt be the main guy doing this, and we would all like to have a project like this. Plus I have found a motor on ebay with low milage that is ready to be shipped. Its more of the project that we are looking for.

I personally wont be doing it I have some guys that will be doing the work they have done engine swaps on many other cars before and want to do it on my volvo.

Well, in that case, it's pretty much in your hands and what you want to pay.

We recently had an engine shipped in here for my Boss' Minister, that he bought off Ebay. Wasn't impressed at all. The crating was horrid and it apparently rolled several times during transit, breaking most everything that will break on it (or they shipped it that way).

Plenty of things I would buy on Ebay, a motor sight unseen is not one I would easily consider, but our experience may have just been one of those flukes or rough treatment in transport. Just be thorough about information before buying, is about all I can suggest.

Good luck with the project if you go through with it. Plenty to learn if you do :)

Thanks. But other than that Does anyone have any info on if the turbo engine is the same mounting as the 2.4L is it a direct swap?

bro, still not worth it. think about it, any swap can be done. i read an article about a 60's volvo with a 300 z tranny mounted in it. if you have the cash and the time, anything can be done. since you will be paying someone to do the work, of course they can do it. the question is, have you thought of how much it'll cost to have this done? like boost and byrd posted, better to seel this one, get a turbo and just start over with the mods. at least it'll always be worth more if you decide to sell.
