Hello guys. I´m hoping you can help me with my problem.

I have a 1998 model S40 T4 1.9 Turbo. When I was driving yesterday the car became really weird to drive and it sounded like it was not running on all cylinders. The power was almost none but if I gently pushed the accelerator I was able to get home, but if I pushed the accelerator to much it gave me no power at all. I looked through all the posts here and saw similar problems that might be caused by bad ignition coils. I went to the Volvo dealership today and bought a new coil (the only gave me 1 but not 2, I thought that was kind of weird) and new spark plugs. I installed the new coil this evening and also changed the spark plugs. The car is still not running on all cylinders. I first put the new coil on cylinder #3 and than tried to put it on cylinder #4 put it did not seem to matter. Do you have any good ideas for me. Do you think I need to buy the other coil ignition and replace both at once? Or do you think that the problem lies somewhere else?

All help is really appreciated =)

Ulfar

When you took the plugs out did they look different? I had a misfiring problem with mine and when I took them out the plugs from #1 and #3 were black while #2 and #4 looked fine. That's how I knew which coil was bad.

I would be very suspicious if both coils went bad at precisely the same time!

Is it misfiring, or simply no power? If no power I'd start looking at the intake for a leak perhaps?

I took out all the old plugs and tried cleaning them the day before. When I took them out again to install the new ones they all looked pretty much the same, all really dirty considered that I cleaned them the day before and had not driven the car since then - only been running in neutral in my parking lot.

When it is running it is definitely misfiring, I can hear small "poofs" coming from my exhaust. I can rev it up but it sounds like it is only running on 3 cylinders.

coil, lead, or plug. get it plugged in and get the code read. just had same problem with a misfire on cylinder 1 and was a coil pack problem (this seems a very common problem on volvos it seems) is now fixed :57:

as i understand it it requires 2 sparks per cycle and sometimes the coil only does the 1 when they on there way out hence the misfire.
