My sunroof will open at the rear to "vent", bit will not slide back to open fully....only about 1/2 inch.
I have found posts on where to purchase the plastic guide/gates.
I've looked around a bit here and can't find what I want.....Can someone direct me to a posting on how to replace these parts?

Thanks in advance,
Jeff in Raleigh, NC USA!

YOUR POST IS A FEW MONTHS OLD..BUT PERHAPS STILL A REPLY IS STILL PERTINENT.

I have a similar problem with my sunroof. I have ordered the parts from the dealer as part of a service bulletin issued by Volvo. I am told the replacements are metal and cost me $78. Replacement of the parts does not look difficult but tedious. Notice the trim strips on the left and right side. These strips cover access to the nuts holding the glass in place. It looks like, with the glass removed you will have access to the selector guides and pins. My replacement parts are expected to arrive in a couple of days. I will follow-up with the actual replacement "experience".

Regards,
Jeff Fallon

Hi Jeff,

Did you get your parts and install them? I just bought a 1997 960 wagon and it has the same sunroof problem. The plastic side pieces are cracked as well. How did the installation go? I probably need the same parts.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,
I never got the track pieces.....$80.00 for two plastic "tracks" was to tough to swallow. I did however take the glass out and clean out the broken plastic bits that were blocking the slide's track. I also removed the "dangling'" remnants of the old guides. I adjusted the glass to compensate and it has worked fine since mid-June. Now, I'm not saying this will last the life of the vehicle, but it'll probably work while we have the car.
Like I said....not the "proper" fix but for now the sunroof opens and closes in both directions and does not leak in rain or driveway car-wash.
Do you have the part number for the track guides? If not I will try to remember where I have the number.

Hi Jeff,

I haven't gotten to far into diagnosing my sunroof problem. I can see that the plastic parts that the glass fastens to are cracked on both sides. I believe this part is called the "Selector Gate" and has the either numbers 9154208 or 9447496 for the left side and 9154209 or 9447494 for the right side. I think the 915 numbers might be with cables and all. The 944 numbers might be just the individual selector.

Jfallon had mentioned that the replacement parts he checked out were metal. I was hoping to get a lead on metal ones. They see to be a logical fix provided by Volvo since these seem to break. I was hoping he would post on the forum his results.

My sunroof will not retract into the roof but up until recently would go into the vent position.

Like I said, I haven't gotten that far into it yet.

Thanks,
Mark

This is interesting..I worked on this last night before reading the posts.

I received the parts from the dealer. The guide inserts are made of plastic, not metal as the parts man at the dealer had mentioned. Note the part(s) I received is Volvo Part No-9492353 with Description-Selector Gate Unit-Kit contains the left and right selector gates. This is not just the plastic guide/liner. This includes the metal "sled" around the broken plastic guide with the spring arms at the rear of the sunroof--seen when the rear of the sunroof is tilted for ventilation. The parts guy at the dealer is researching the Volvo Service Bulletin pertaining to installation of the new guides. If I get the service bulletin, I will make available. He is one of the "old guys" and very helpful.

Last night I removed the sunroof glass to look at what is involved in replacing the guides. The guides ride in an enclosed channel. Looks like a major job. Removal of the headliner required to replace guides from below or removal of the entire sunroof unit. I do not want to try this one without instructions. ..I stop here and trim the broken portion of the guide and the sunroof will now fully open and close without binding. However I now have metal to metal contact on a small section of the guide.

I have requested a copy of Volvo Technical Service Bulletin 8830013 MAR 99 Sunroof - Selector Gate Replacement from my Volvo dealer. This bulletin is available on AllData.com for those with a subscription. I do not. If I receive more information, I will post.

Thanks Jeff, (both of you Jeffs, actually)

I looked in my copy of the Vadis service manual, but it doesn't seem to have that bulletin.

Any help you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
I'd like to get all my ducks in a row as well before tackling this project.

You don't need to remove the headliner to replace a guide! I shall try to explain, as there is also a guy in the 850 forum who is trying to get his apart.

Remove the glass panel 2 torx screws per side and slide back and up.

Remove the other torx screw on each side of the sunroof - removing this one allows the large metal piece the glass panel slides into to flop up and down. You should now have 6 gold colored sunroof screws - 3 per side.

With the roof in the closed position remove the rear water channel - 2 small torx screws per side. - set this aside.

Flip the large metal pieces up and forward. You can use them to hold the wind baffle piece down

Examine the track from outside looking down, you will see an area in the black outside edge that has a break in it. The hard cable housing terminates beneath it, there are 3 torx screws holding this piece on - This piece is roughly 3 inches long and is the access for replacing cables or replacing guides. Remove this piece.

To remove the rear guide you need to slide it forward enough to see the end of the cable - pop the cable end out. To slide it forward enough to remove the guide you need to pop the black cap off the front end of the track under the wind baffle - yep, another torx. Remove the torx and use the pliers to wiggle the cap out - it has a long plastic piece attached that slides inside the track - note how this comes apart.

Slide the front guide forward all the way and you will have enough room to slide the rear one out. Or if you need the front one out slide the rear one back a bunch and you will have enough room to remove it.

This is the same for both sides of the car. When you re-install make sure you hook the cable back up and connect the rain channel. screw the access cap back down and re-install the front of track cap.
