I picked up my brand new V50 this week, this is my first volvo and i have come to find that my lights automatically come on when i start the car up and i can not turn them off!!?? I have since noticed that many Volvo Drivers just seem to always have there lights on.

Is there something i can do to turn them off or do i need to take it into the dealership and get them to do something? If this is the case is i a 2 minute job and do they charge you for it?

Any help is much appreciated :)

Not sure its European law yet.. why don't other cars have it if so... however I may be wrong.

Its a safety feature that volvos seem to have always had and it basically is not meant to be overridden. I actually think its a good feature. However i have read that it does affect MPG - though i really think this must be negligable in the scheme of things.

So in answer to your question its a documented feature, rather than a bug or glitch.

Volvos did have daytime running lights in Oz for a while but this ceased many years ago and current Volvos are seen well enough in the Aussie sun without needing lights on. A more sensible solution, as has been adopted in a number of cars, is to have the lights turn on automatically in low light conditions. This would significantly improve the life-expectancy of the light bulbs compared to having them on all the time, especially during those long bright days of summer!

i know that in greece, cyprus, finland, france and italy where i have family, it is law, so i guess that kind of makes in europe. maybe it's according to municipalities, not sure. about affecting mpg, no. it's just annoying is all.

Hopefully cars in future will have dedicated daytime running lights featuring low energy LEDs to improve visibilty for safety, as lights designed for illuminating the road ahead use more fuel and are not really needed during bright days. We may see some interesting light designs soon!

When I took delivery of an S60 in 2001 I told the dealer I wanted the day time lights turned off. They forgot and I had to return to dealer after delivery, but I got them turned off no problem. I hope to do the same when my new V50 arrives. AFAIK the UK law does not require cars to run with day lights. Volvo just see them as a safety feature, but I'd rather operate my lights manually instead of burning bulbs constantly. There are many time you Don't want the lamps on when engine is running.

i think the dealers are charging around $100us to do it here... i figured its a safety feature that will cost me a little when i have to replace my headlamps more often... i would definitely turn them off if i had xenon

US charge is $65 to do the software. In the US, it can be done for free at the first oil change (free) at 7500 miles. This was new for 07 when they stopped the service program. I'd just pay the money and do it now.
