I want to patch some rust spots on the roof of my red 244GL.

I have some red auto acrylic enamel (ICI Autocolour) and I also have some acrylic lacquer in another colour, from another supplier, for another car.

So I know there's 'enamel' and 'lacquer'.

What should I use on the Volvo? Does it matter? Can you put the one on top of the other indiscriminately?

I have primer/undercoat for the lacquer (PPG Dulon) but none for the enamel. Can I use the lacquer undercoat for the enamel or must I buy special enamel undercoat ?

regards,

ab :)

It is my understanding that the original paint is either enamel or 2 pack polyurethane. However for DIY touch up work acrylic is easier to work with as it dries hard fairly fast so you can get a smooth primer on and top coat all in a few hours, and you can polish it after a few days/weeks.

Enamel can go over hard dry acrylic and vice versa, but you can't mix them when the base has any solvent still in it.

Spray on a few coats of primer then smooth them with 120-180 grit wet and dry paper, fill any big holes with epoxy filler and small nicks and scratches with spot putty.

Remove the bulk of the excess epoxy filler before it completely hardens with 60-80 grit or a sharp blade. Smooth it out again then a couple more coats of primer. Smooth it out with 600 grit and top coat 3 or 4 layers of color.

Let it all dry out for up to 2 weeks and then rub it with 1200 grit and polish it with cutting polish.

Thanks for that. It's good news.

So I'll use my existing undercoat: Dulon Lacquer one-shot primer/filler, and put the ICI acrylic enamel on top of it.

I already primed it, in fact, hurriedly, with a brush, just for the sake of getting something done.

No use getting too fussy about it - the whole car is badly faded and needs a total repaint really. Not sure if it is worth doing that. In fact I'm going to start another thread to raise just that question.

regards,

ab :)

i suggest just a good going over with T-cut will bring old paint work back to looking new, had to to that a few times on cars, this was my last project.

saves a fortune on a complete re-spray, took me about 4 hours to do the entire car!!
