I own a 1996 Volvo 850 GLT Non-Turbo, and I am trying to see what it would cost and the amount of work involved in converting it to a turbo. I have no idea all the parts I would need to find, so hoping someone here will know. Thank you for any help. :)

Feel free to pick on the new guy.

a lot of work mate, for starters ..

turbo unit
exhaust manifold
downpipe
cat
intercooler
air feeds for
bigger fuel injectors
new ecu
air mass meter
oil feed pipes
oil cooler
cost to crate oil feeds in engine block
coolant feeds
dump valve
wiring
clutch
make sure you gearbox can handle the extra torque
brake upgrades
suspension upgrades (for big power)
LABOUR

believe me it is FAR cheaper to buy a turbo'd engine recon or something and get that dropped in.

i have spent 2 or 3 years researching into turbo's superchargers and nos and all the fitting to go with etc... and i still dont now a lot of info, i have about 25 books, and there is a lot of math there that you have to get right to match the turbo to the engine displacement etc...

there have been several posts about this already , do a quick search to see the results, but the short answer is, sell this one and buy a turbo model. cheaper in the long run. good luck. even with buying a wrecked turbo model, you will need to transplant everything over, not that it is difficult, you will have everything there in front of you, it will be time consuming. if you are doing the work yourself, cool, if you are paying someone, expect to be on the expensive side, unless you can work out a deal.

Thanks! I appreciate the post and time into the response. I'm still paying on this car so I wasn't looking into buying another one yet. But thank you for your time. So if i could find just the engine out of an turbo one that would let me keep the one i have no plus not have a lot more to do other than that? Cause while not looking to buy a new car looking at the new engine would be an option for me.

Thanks!

Well, if you still have to pay off the car, it's prob not worth it. I'm guessing a new turbo engine for a '96 is at least a few grand, not including all the turbo related parts you would still need to buy that are not inculded with just the engine/turbo.

If you find an engine from a wrecked car, you would still need to transplant all the turbo related items that you don't have, assuming they are all good parts. If not, the parts and cost could add up pretty quick.

I'm not trying to rain on your parade, but personally, I would pay off the one you have, save-up, and get a turbo model next tme. Either that, or make this into a project car at some point. Just my 2cents...

and a rebuttal from me, along with a smart-alecky type of answer. see if you can sell off your current 850, i know that you are paying it off, but maybe you can parlay that into an R. now, question what engine do you have? 2.4 or 2.3 non-turbo?

quoting this, read it and my post (first reply) you are looking into a lot of time effort and money all for an extra 50bhp as standard. ok turbo's you can whack new cams in, bottom end a better hybrid turbo etc... and get 600bhp out of it, but you really are looking at tens of thousands for that spec.
