1) We just bought (May 3rd) a 2008 S40 2.4i which now has 500 to 600 miles on it. When asking the salesman about switching to synthetic, he said Volvo didn't recommend that until 7500 miles.........is that true?

I'm a BIG fan of Mobil 1 ....... I put it in my 1995 Chevy K1500 Z71 back when it had 2,500 miles on it.......it now has almost 225,000 and the engine has never been touched.

2) Any reason why Volvo made the DRL no different than just turning your headlights on?? Why would you want all your parking lights to be running as well........seems like they would have used "actual" DRL like GM does.

Thanks!

first, congrats on your s40, great car. now, let your break in period pass. when the first oil change is up, then go synthetic. as for the DRL's, it's a law. don't mess with them, not sure about your states law, but here in ny, if it is supposed to be on and they aren't, you fail inspection. if a cop pulls you over and they aren't on, ticket. now why are the parking lights on also, call ford. they own volvo and they call the shots.

Thank you very much!

So I guess the "break-in" period and oil change pretty much corresponds with the 7500 mile check? It's going to be hard on me but I guess I can wait that long.

Ford calling the shots is the "only" thing I've got against this car........I'm a " GM man " .

Regarding the DRL law, I'm pretty sure (for now) that doesn't apply in TX.

no, usually the break in period is like the first 1,000 miles. the dealer should have told you that, or it's in the owners manual. once the break in has passed then the 7500 miles start. or something like that. but once the break in period is over, you can put in whatever you like, as long as it's certified. and i think to turn off your drl on your s40, you need to go to the dealer, i think on those years it's all in the computer.

I have been trying to get my DRLs turned off, too ('06 s40 2.4i). My CA dealer tells me that they are unable to extinguish them on the current generation of s40. However, sources on another forum (Swedespeed) indicate that the dealers are able to turn them off with the correct Volvo Factory downloaded program.

I guess if the dealer is willing to work with you, it may happen. I'm still looking!

Do a search on the Swedespeed.com ... about 10 posts come up on this subject. Sadly, I couldn't find many on this forum :(

I haven't gotten around to doing it yet......but when I mentioned it to my dealer ( in Dallas TX ), they just said OK. Looks like now I'll probably just wait until the 7500 mi. check.......we've currently got about 5400 on it.

I still can't believe that their DRL system as ALL the bulbs on the car burning.........doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

That's good news from your dealer. I wonder why mine told me that they could not extinguish the DRLs.

Could you update this post after your car's 7500 mile service? I'd be very interested in seeing if the dealer truly can turn off the DRLs.

Many :liebe011:

I purchased my 2006 Volvo S40 2.4i new. I believe that I should be able to turn my lights off and on when necessary like most people. There was no law in my area concerning day time running lights so I discussed this with my Volvo dealership.

They said that they do indeed have the software to turn the daytime running lights off and all I have to do is pay for the software. The total cost for the job was approx. $75 I had this done within the first month of ownership back in 2006. The guys in the Volvo service Dept. said that they also turned the automatic running lights feature off on their own personal Volvos because it saves money over time when it comes to replacing expensive headlights that burn out faster when they are on all of the time.

Now my lights turn off and on with the normal rotary switch to the left of the steering wheel and if I leave my lights switched to the "on" position they automatically turn off when I turn the ignition off with the key.

Volvo does have the software and can turn your daytime running lights off if you are willing to pay.

BimmertoVolvo: Thanks so much for verifying what I believed to be true! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/liebe011.gif) I don't know why dealers are so hesitant to work with their clients -- us! Could you give me the name of your dealer so that I could contact them personally to get info on the procedure. I think my dealer needs to have it spoon-fed to them. I also would like to have the auto-headlights turned off. Hmmmm. Road-trip to TN?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
