Hi all

Wee bit of help please. Just now my spedo went poof, it didn't just die though. At first it would show correct speed until I hit a bump then it would drop and come back up to normal.
Then it showed 0 speed unless I hit a bump in which case it would show correct speed for a second and drop back to 0.
Now it's not doing anything at all and the odometer isn't working either.

Help? Where to look first? Can it be a loose fuse? (doubt that) please if any of you can help, the car is a 89 740GL Sedan non turbo and I would like to see if I can fix it myself before bringing it into the garage :)

Thanks in advance.

sounds like it might be the little gear inside. try fcpgroton.com for the parts. a little pain in the butt to get out, but easy as hell.

Thank you small question, just what part am I looking for? I have been going thru the site but can't seem to find it. Then again I don't know what the part is called either :)

edit: I found a speedo Transmitter is that what I am looking for? If so I can only see a model for the 1988 model of the 740. Would that work anyway assuming this is the part I need.

Thanks again

I think the gear affects the odometer only, speedo is usually electronic.

Could be a broken component in speedo/odometer unit, or a loose (ground)connection.

Easiest fix is to get the whole instrument cluster from Ebay, they sell for around $50 there.

Well I fixed it  I poked my nose under the car and didn't see anything loose, then again I really didn't know what I was looking for to begin with heheh.
So I popped out the cluster and again nothing was loose, now mind you all I know about cars is change the oil, put gas in, turn the key and it goes vroom vroom when I hit the gas. :)
Anyway I see the wire that goes to the Speedo and tug on it, all tight, pulled it out, put it back, tightened everything back there for good measure, put it all back and somehow it's working again :)

So a hearty thank you to everyone and to the poster above me as from the way it died I knew it had to be a loose something somewhere.

Beers for everyone!

Update

It's not working again, I did the same thing as yesterday and poked and prodded in the back of the cluster but nothing, it also died the same way as it did the first time.
I know it's a loose something but for the life of me now I a stumped.
I will be looking into a new cluster from Ebay however I would love to fix this myself :)

WooHoo 100% fixed!

I got a friend to bring over those ramps an put the back tires on it. Now that I had a better point of view I looked to where you guys said the sender unit would be on the rear axle.
Sure enough I found it and I found a cut wire. Spliced in some new wire on both wires for good measure fired up and car and everything works like a charm.

Again a huge thank you to all of you in this form, you just saved me a bunch of money as one place I called said a 4 hour min charge for electric problems.

Thanks again.
