Can anyone Help me please!!!!

The problems i am experiencing are as follows:-

Car starts fine,But isn't too happy idling, sounds as if it's missing in lower revs it'll run as long as you want but either way isn't happy idling if I turn it off and try and start it again it'll turn over but won't start When doing this (refusing to start) I get pops from the exhaust and a strong smell of petrol from the exhaust.

If i then leave it for a couple of days, (yeah days!!) It'll fire and run first turn of the key but with the same symptoms as above.

This all came about after it ran out of fuel on my drive it was running great before that,I've so far replaced the battery cos the old one was goosed although i did let some **** so called mechanic have a look and came home from work one afternoon to find he had connected the batery charger directly to the battery without disconnecting the battery from the car, Could this have damaged anything????.

The Car is an M reg Volvo 440 Glt 2ltr with multipoint injection

Any help would be grealy appreciated, I don't want to have to scrap it!!!

cheers

A Sad Volvo Fan.

:liebe011: Haven't checked filters yet they were aparently new when i bought the car about 1 yr ago.

I've just got hold of the diagnostic codes so thats a possible try, I've also managed to get a copy of VADIS so hopefully that'll help.

I'll keep you guys posted an hopefully between us we can save thecars from the crusher.......

If its the air mass meter (thats the thing up on the shelf jus in front of the windscreen, then check the vacuum hose, mine got blocked at the restrictor (injector end) and caused all sorts of problems, worth a look anyway, so the unit may not be faulty in itself, I went through 3 different units before I found this.

:liebe011: Cheers GRENDEL wil give it a try mate

Would that be a small black box with a hose that comes out through the bulkhead then goes onto rigid pipe which then goes to the left hand side of the manifold (looking from the front)??? just that when i got the car this hose kept popping off which caused the car to run rough so i tie wrapped it back inside the ropey bit which comes from the manifold.

Went out earlier checked diagnostics came back 1-1-1 though the car started first turn this time it ran better than normal, so i turned it off and started it again it started first time (BIG SURPRISE). Got Cocky after letting it run for a bit turned it off again and guess what happened..... yep won't start , Back firing through exhaust but not running.

Still I Aint going to give up on it it's too good a car to strip/scrap.

thats the part, if thats disconnected the car thinks its running under ground level as it doesnt get any vacuum, and adjusts timing and fuel to suit. if its blocked its a similar case, if the pipe is loose it might be leaking vacuum and not operating correctly, I replaced mine with one from a breakers, and made a point of getting a new pipe too, it was the pipe that eventually cured it, I found the old one was blocked.
