I've got an 87 244 that shakes bad at cold start idle for up to a minute, then it clears. I found the temp sensor wire was disconnected, put it back on, and it seems to shake less now (less vibration and less time). I'm wondering if that's the computer trying to compensate and if I can reset it by disconnecting the battery.

The car's had a ton of work around the fuel system, including a new idle air valve. The repair shop claims they can't fix the idle because the car needs a new wiring harness. The wires look okay, though a couple of plastic terminal covers have disintegrated. And it runs perfectly once past cold idle.

disconnect == reset! give it abt 5-10min to be sure. if temp >0deg C then anti knock sensor not operating, due to normal cold motor noise level-so timing can get too advanced when motor very cold. - suggest you check the mircoswitch on the throttle butterfly for good electrical operation and adjustment-it MAY provide a counter to the overadvancing for idle - but I don't know it will. BTW a little patience and skill and you can replace the wiring DIY. It's not a difficult job, though it takes a little time. or u can buy one as a harness part, and fit it yourself, again, not difficult. see ebay for quite a few bits, and use the web search engines for other info/parts/suppliers.

Thanks! If the reset solves the idle, I'm gonna let 'er eat the way she is. I've already spent three full days on other wiring.

Next up, new a/c clutch, then home to her momma.

make sure any vacuum line to the ignition module is not leaking. will cause some serious problems if you haven't got enough advance, and the leak can compromise the idle mixture.

The shaking has subsided considerably on cold start (60º F). It still has a few seconds of rough-running, but overall it's close to right. Computer doesn't want to give it up :)
