The door hinge on my fuel filler door has broken. I ordered a new part which arrived with no instructions.

Can someone describe how to use the small pins (instead of screws) during installation which hold the hinge to the car body?

I had a 96 Volvo that a previous owner ripped the door off so he could fuel his car.

I ordered a new door and hinge from a Volvo wrecking yard in Atlanta. They were very helpful, even matched my color.

In any case I had the same problem as you. Fortunately I had a buddy with me who knew what to do.

If the holes where the new hinge fits still have bits of plastic from the old hinge, remove them. Then just place the new hinge over the holes, take sometype of blunt instrument, like a nail punch, but turn it around, and then gently tape the nail punch with a hammer. This drives the platic bits, or whatever they are called into the holes. Hinge attached.

I hope these directions made sense to you.

Terry:

Thank you. That was my guess, but it helps a LOT to know ahead of time.

As a follow up to Terry's description, I used a nail punch to push the old pins all the way through in order to remove what was left off the old hinge.

Then, one of the pins on the new hinge would not push through. So I tapped it with a hammer. It was still stubborn so I hit a little harder and it went completely through and got lost inside the car somewhere. I had to salvage one of the pins from the old hinge, and taper one end to get it started in the hole and push it in using a pair of pliers.

This worked just fine, however. Easy as pie.

I just went through the same thing with my 89 740T - purchased the black hinge at the volvo dealer - 13 bucks and immediately broke each of those flimsy plastic push pins off...tried super glue...then went through all of my "household repair" nuts and bolts and used those little expanding plugs that you use in drywall - the size that fits snuggly in the hole - then drove in the philipps screws. The hinge will never leave the car...and the 13 buck piece wasn't wasted...

I just used Stainless Steel Blind Rivets!
After drilling the rivet holes in the black hinge(where the plastic pins were) & then enlarging the holes where the pins went, i just riveted the hinge to the car.

It provided a "better than factory Hold". :57:
