Would like to use the ipod side of an iphone and, or an ipod in my vehicle. Can it be done and if so how?

Hi there.
I am not sure what connections are on an iPhone but i do know that the item i have attached will work for an ipod.
I have one in my 2002 V70 and it allows you to plug it in and use the steering wheel controls to change tracks etc.
It has been an excellent purchase. I pursuaded the dealership to plumb it in for free because they messed something up but it seems fairly straight forward.!!
