Hi all,

I've got a 2000 S40 with a double DIN radio (CD and Cassette). Anyhow, I have decided to get the replacement pocket from a dealer, as they seem to be hard to find - at least ones that will match the current interior.

So my questions are:
• If I were to try to install a new radio for myself, what should I look out for?
• I'll installing a standard mp3/CD/USB radio with built in amp, I dont need extra equipment do I?
• Are there other parts that I need to buy?
• Is it tricky to install - running the risk of scratching/marking the pocket etc.?

This would be my first go at doing this - would it be better to get someone - say Halfords to do it for me?

Thanks in advance. :)
Aaron

Well, so far I've got the part I wanted for the tray in the dash, but I have to say - finding the right connector has been a right hassle...

The dashboard so far....

I have a Sony radio, which I think/thought has a regular ISO connection, at least that what the tech spec says.... Here's a pic of the 16 PIN connector on the radio:

And here's a pic of the connection adapter I bought (part number PC2-71-4 Adapter page):

As you can (hopefully) see, they don't match. The original cables obviously dont match either, hence the widely publicised need for the part mentioned above, but maybe the radio has an odd connection type? It's a Sony CDX-GT210. Everywhere I've looked on the web says ISO connection, but no further details.

Anyone here know about this kind of thing? Please clue me on what to do. I'd definitely appreciate it.

Many thanks!

Hi mate

The one you have 2714 I think is the wrong one for you car. I think you need Autolead 2374. Theres only two but somewhere Volvo changed the ISO connector so there is 2714 (for 2002 plate like mine I think) and 2374 (for older generation s40's) or vice versa I cant rember what mine is. Illl try finding the box for it. But if the 2714 dont work it might be the other one. Try your local halfords as they gave me the older ISO connector and had to order the new one.

check this link below.

I think that connector is the one you want above.

You can also check Autoleasd website below

Thanks for the reply mate.

The connection adapter does fir to the car, but not to the radio, so..... I've taken another look and ended up buying this as well. Only £4 from ebay.

I think Sony have a unique(?) 16 pin connector at the back.

So when this arrives in the post, I'll have 2 adapters coming from the OEM wiring to the radio. It's a bit long-winded, but hopefully it should work properly. Maybe I neglected to take the 16PIN - ISO connector off when I took the Radio out of my previous car... Then again, it was a 440 and the ISO might not have become standard at the time of its build....

Also, as a side note, where can I find the date of manufacture or my S40? The car could be registered as Nov 200, but might have been built months before that correct?

Thanks,
Aaron

I think you may be right with the Sony having a slightly unique connector, It's been several year's since i had a Sony HU but everytime I did they fitted straight away no new leads required.

If I remember right ISO as such became prominent/standard in all car's in the late 1990's so anything before that was kinda hit and miss.

If that connector doesnt work , go visit a local audio sparky and get them to make you a ISO connector. I had to do that with a Mk3 Fiesta once, cut a few cables and re-solder and it did the job, it aint hard just knowing where the cables go!

You are making your install harder by looking for a wire adapter that goes from a factory Volvo harness to your Sony specific radio. The Sony should have come with a harness that plugs into the back going to bare wire ends. This would be connected to an opposite harness that would be vehicle specific. In your case a Metra 70-9221 or like harness. If you have a factory amplifier then sound will only come through the tweeters. The audio signal will need a RCA to DIN adapter. QBM has some pictures of the adapters, or you can buy them off the Bay. Plenty of vendors on your side of the pond that should have the proper parts. Good luck

P.S. You might need an antenna adapter,(aerial)

Hi, yeah I found out after the fact, that the Sony isn't actually an ISO fitting. So there will now be 2 adapters going to the radio.

I now have an adapter which goes from factory Volvo to ISO and then I'll see about the RCA connecter as well.

Fortunately, I've got the aerial adapter.

Thanks for the response.
