Help.
My mechanic doesn't seem to have the correct OBD II reader for my 97 855R.
The dealer wants $ to read the codes, and that doesn't make $ sense.
Therefore.
I'm willing to break down and buy an OBD II reader (or is that OBD 2?) to find out what's up with the ABS TRACS system on my 97 855R.
The ABS TRACS lights are on.
I know.
I already had the module rebuilt about two months ago.
The lights went out for about two weeks, then came back on.
I am sure that ABS and TRACS are NOT WORKING.
So.
From other forums i've learned it could be the ignition electrical switch that's making the lights come on.
Somebody else said it could be the sending units at the wheels.
And of course, the module could be causing it.

Three questions.
1. Which OBD II reader do you recommend, and where can I buy one?
2. What codes should I be looking for once I buy the reader?
3. In what order should I proceed?

I guess I'm really looking for the definitive recommendation, followed by the definitive diagnostic procedure.

If anyone could help me, that would be great.

i bought mine from pepboys. $149. reads scans erases. just doesn't do dishes. that's why i got married  oops, here comes the wife. :haha: anyway, are you sure that the abs/trac is working? panic stopping and you feel it? if not, get the reader and see what comes up, only then will you know for certain. anyway, pepboys has a special that they will read the codes for like 10 bucks. anything more and they are full of (**(^(. either way, the reader will pay itself back after one use, it did for me, anyway. good luck and post when you find what the code is. then we can fully help. good luck.

I agree with the decision to one yourself. It pays in the longer term. Definitely.

Good luck.

And oh, if it means anything, i would suggest you at least checkout the one IPD is offering. The one with the CD installation, and the cable. Not the Scangauge II. but the other one.

The ScanGauge II is good, as well... actually. I just prefer the one working with the laptop.

Actually, bro. It just makes me look 'super-cool' with the laptops and wires coming in and out the car when the neighbours take a peek. :haha:

Nevermind if i short-circuit anything and puffs of smoke are seen from the cabin...

:hang-self: :alien: :alien: :alien:

hey i have some questions. i always get lights so i was thinking about getting one of these. i checked snap-on and their readers are a couple grand. i dont need that. i just need one that tells me the problem and one that can erase the light. the one from pep boys seems good and its a good price.

anyways, my question is, is OBD2 for 1996+ vehicles only? cuz thats what all the sites say. and my volvo is a 94...

but i remember when i was a kid my mom took it to a friend and he played around with some wire on the car's computer and made the engine light go away. and i dont think he used an obd2. either way, i need to get one cuz i have other newer cars and it will never hurt to have one.

do you know the brand of the pep boys one?

OBD 2 is 1996 and newer vehicles Your 1994 should have OBD 1 Like what it shows here http://volvospeed.com/Repair/a2.html
