I have a 97 850 auto non turbo. The trans was going out so I got one with 58.000 on it And it is in the car now It only has 1st gear unless it is in winter mode then it's stuck in 3rd you can lock it down to 1st & 2nd with the shifter when it's in winter mode. When it's not in winter mode you only have 1st. No trans light are flashing. I took it to volvo and they said it's the wrong trans.Even though it's the same model one that came out of the car. I got the trans computer that was in the car that the transmission came out of and nothings changed. Any help would be great Thanks Alvie :puzzled:

Did you fit in a USED transmission?
I think the fault is with the USED transmission.

I am on the lookout for a transmission too, since my current one is out of order/out of service. The volvo guy said I need the one with the correct code number to use, otherwise the trans wont work. Something like the engine and the trans has to share the correct number to match and let it work together.

I am still waiting for quotation. Any ideas how much it will cost?

I was always under the impression the 850 & 70 series used variations of the Aisin AW50-42, 4 speed automatic gearboxes from 1993 till 2000 when the gearbox was upgraded to an Aisin AW55-50/51SN. And for reasons best known to themselves, Volvo seemed to take a masochistic delight in changing the automatic gearbox control modules, so much so, I think even the service people aren't quite sure just what is what now.

If you get the correct control module mated with the correct gearbox - your problem should be solved. Sorry I couldn't be of any more help!

Volgrr,

Am not sure the situation there, but i think it only applies to models with factory immobilisers here, i guess.

I am on a V70T5 gearbox for quite some time now. Thus far, no problems.

Bigdaddy,

More and more feedback i received, said that using USED gearboxes are better than the rebuilt ones.

No probs. In my post I stated that Aisin AW52-42 automatic transmissions were used in the 850 series and the 70 series up till the 2001 model.

So, your 70 series auto tranny is obviously a pre-2001 one.

Give me the POWER, and i shall find you the BEST one in the market.
HEEEHEEHEE...

OK,OK, try setting aside about RM4K. It should be less than that.
A rebuilt one, is also around that price UPWARDS (max= RM8K) but with a WHOLE LOT MORE HEADACHE.

:)

Yes, Alvie. I believe he was talking about the TCM. Also he noted that the issue should only arise from post 2000 models. Not the 1999 one like yours.

sorry Bear.. I did not check the forum.

Answer to your question.. I was looking for price for both Rebuild or Used.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on which point of view, because of the mismatch serial number, I couldn't get a quotation from the 'specialists'.

So what come next was to change the gear selector switch (please correct the name). And it appears to work for a while. (hint: I did not change the trans)
Apparently the Used selector switch had a small problem with one of the cable plug clip. The clip was gone, and it did not really stuck snuggly into the socket. Guess, this part wobble a bit, and got loose, which put the trans in problem again. Or rather.. the car does not want to get into gears again.
Will do the clip and see if it works.

Btw, when I change the selector, the car was tested on start stop traffic around PJ and Subang Jaya. It was OK, until it was tested on KESAS. It started to shake a bit before the car loose gear. I believe it was all electrical/electronic problem since the car or gear works OK.

p/s. sorry I did not notice the forum reply. My earlier experience on forum is that there will be email notice sent to the email inbox when there is a reply. Guess, this forum did not apply that rule.

-thanks

Well, answering your question.

A rebuilt one, with a common warranty of SIX months, can go anywhere between RM5K to RM8K.
A used one, on the other hand, does not have any warranties, and usually is price less than RM4K.

I got a quote for a used one for less than 4k. I am taking it. Hopefully it will solve my problem altogether. The car is still good for daily use, except for this major problem.

Bigdaddy,

I would suggest you 'order' or 'keep' one handy.

Bigdaddy,
there's one in Kayu Ara that quoted 2.8K, but I settle for the one from Shah Alam at 3+. All because my gut feel think, that is a better deal (not price alone.. must consider others too). If you must know, another shop in Sg Penchala ask for a whopping 6K.

Once installed, I will let you know if it works fine. Btw, I only gets 1 month warranty.
