Hi All

Newbie to the forum and to Volvo's. I've bought a 2005 v50 2.0D, and on the whole the car is nice, but when I corner I get a knocking noise in the drivers seat. The unofficial Volvo garage I use tightened all the bolts on the seat, and think the issue is internal. I just wondered if anybody else had seen this type of behaviour? the seats are leather, with heating in them

Cheers

Your problems sparks some nostalgic memories. I have not heard much knocking sounds coming from car seats since the general decline of drive-in movies! However on a more serious note I suggest you check the exhaust and (less likely) transmission mounts under the car. If these have drifted a bit towards the side of the transmission tunnel they will knock on the side of the tunnel (& feel like it is coming from under the seat) when cornering. Exhaust systems in particular tend to wobble around a bit normally and need a good degree of free space around them, more so if a rubber mount is loose of broken. Also check for loose heat shields rattling around the exhaust.

Hi

Thanks for your reply, I had the car in at a specialist, and they confirmed it's the seat, and took it out of the car, and found the area of knocking, but can't fix it, they have packed with grease, but still knocking. May have to go to the dealer now, which could be expensive, they will probably tell me it needs a new drivers seat

If your knocking sound comes up during car traveling over uneven road or during cornering, you might wanna have the technician checking the seatbelt retracting device on the chair, as it may either need to grease up or have the mechanism replaced. Hope this is helpful.

I have had both my front seats lubricated by the dealer under warranty - drivers after 12 months and passenger after 24 months so i believe this is a known issue. Creaking/knocking noise when cornering cured both times

Hello.

I had the same problem, with my drivers seat, Volvo repairshop greased up the seat during a normal service at no cost. It did not help right away, but after a few days, the sound was gone

Best regards from.

Hi

the problem you have with the knocking in your car seat is from the WHIPS system a mate of mine had the very same problem in his S40, and the local dealer diagnosed the whips system had a small failure which was a diagnosis made from volvo HQ,

I personally dont own a volvo yet, but its on order and it a hell of along wait for mine

Ive ordered the V50 1.8 S R-Design in sapphire black

Hope i have given you at least another idea to investigate

I have just noticed something curious that may relate to this topic. I have been aware of a slight creaking sound coming from somehere near the door side of the driver' seat in my V50 for some time. This is not loud and only noticed when the car is not moving and I move slightly in the seat.

Today I tried moving without wearing the seatbelt and there was no noise at all. I put back on the belt and tried moving it ever so slightly from my body - and sure enough, there was that noise - not by my moving in the seat, but on moving the belt!. Obviously this is coming from the belt retracting/locking mechanism and is possibly a normal part of its function.

The noise may be more obvious in different positions of the seat in relation to the the belt and obviously braking of cornering would bring the mechanism into play - causing the noise.
