I read on one of these forums someone re-did their front grille with materials from HomeDepot or somewhere. This seems like a good option for me, rather than paying the expensive amount some aftermarket shops want for a replacement grill.

Problem is, I can't find the post again. Any help? (or better yet, anybody who has done it who wants to help? rafferty_philip@mac.com )

thanks

Don't remember the post but I guess you could find some aluminum or similar metal mesh (like what they use to put over old steam heater covers) and take the existing grill and, using a dremel or other cutting tool, remove the inside of the grill leaving just the outer frame. Then figure out how to insert the mesh. Let us know if you work up the nerve to try it.

lol, that's why I posted first - I'm not sure I have the nerve to try! maybe we should all just get together (after I buy the mesh material) and hold hands while I do it? I sort of want to try it just to see if I can, but also to save money.

go to the junk yard and get a junker grille. then buy some mesh or screen or whatever catches your fancy. like jks2 had posted, dremel out the slats and, up to you, you can sand down the nubs for that clean appearance. now the question is, do you want the mesh all the way to the edges, or do you want a border around it? the difference is, wrap the mesh/screen all the way around the edges, tuck them in at the corners, and attach on the underside, with as little overhang as possible to keep from seeing it from the front. or, get some thin tubing or a thick-ish wire, like a coathanger, and bend it so that it is the size of the inner measurement of the grille. that way, you can wrap the mesh/screen around the wire, insert it into the now cleaned out grille opening and viola, instant border. that is why you might want to sand down the nubs for a cleaner apperance. the only thing is, if you go for the second method, you might want to paint the border since the sanding will take off the fake chrome paint. either way you go, you a super strong glue. zip ties, or wire ties will show through. remember, pull it tight for a custom look. then either you that one, if you had a steady hand and made no mistakes, or repeat the process on the one on your car now. you know, that give me an idea to actually try it on mine. hmmmmmmmmmmm, you might be onto something. and i have a crap load of fine grain mesh in the garage. off the garage. good luck and post some pics.
