I have recently noticed a whirring noise behind dashboard after shutting off my 02 S60. The sound lasts about 45 seconds, then stops. I initially thought it sounded like the CD turning but have ruled that out. A friend's 01 S60 seems to have the same symptoms when I mentioned it to him. Guidance as to what could be the cause? Thanks.

Check your car's manual. It says in there that there are fans in the car that will continue to run after the ignition is turned off. Beyond that, there are even fans that can automatically turn on like even an hour or something after the car is off. If you hear it coming from behind the dash, or at the front of the car near the radiator, that's what it is.

If your car has climate control, behind the controls is a little fan that draws cabin air in to monitor the cabin temp - I suspect thats your source of noise.

Its the climate control purging itself of moisture...pretty normal
