This morning the tilt lever on my 02 S60 stopped working. Of course it is in the unlock (down) position so the steering wheel is not locked in one position and it is in the way of my knee when I try to exit the car.

Has anyone ever had this problem and if so what is the solution, short of taking it to a mechanic for an overpriced repair.

 You say the wheel is in the down position and unlocked but is in the way of your knee when exiting..Can't you just push the wheel up if its unlocked..??
I've had trouble in the past trying to lock my wheel, seem it just would'nt find the correct slot and I could not lock the bar in the up position....
At times I'd change wheel position while driving and it would not lock....
Guess what I'am trying to say during the fustration of locking I'd really force the issue (muscle the wheel) and it would then lock.........
This has been several months past, and have no problem since....
Possible someone out there will have a answer (maybe a bit of lubrication) or an adjustment somewhere...I'd like to know myself....Sorry I was'nt any help..

Well the lever that locks and unlocks the tilt mechanism is in the open position that allows the steering wheel to be put in a locked position. The lever wont move which allows the steering wheel to move. The lever is what is in the way of my knees. I've tried muscling the lever, to no avail. I'm afraid if I push it any harder I'll break it off.
