I have not long bought my car and decided to do an ATF flush 3 week ago as the fluid looked really dark although it was shifting smooth enough. I bought 12 litres which was all i could afford at the time and anyway i thought it would be enough. By the time i had flushed the 12 litres through the fluid was pink with a slight brown tinge. This was ok as i thought mostly new ATF is better than all old, and i could do it again when i had some more money. Gears still shift smooth enough same as before but i looked at the fluid today and its gone really brown again.( It don't smell burnt) Any ideas why? In the 3 weeks since i flushed it i have only done 100 perhaps 200 miles at the most. The car has only done 64000. Any help from anyone is greatly appreciated

well, think about it, even with a flush, there is still some of that old oil in there. it is handling all that heat in there. but, when you say dark, is it as dark as when you flushed it out the first time?

The fluid that came out was Black. The 3 week old stuff is Brown. I am getting a bit worried about it as everyone says when you check your fluid it should be Pink and stay Pink.

it's cleaning itself out. if you did one of those automatic flushes which sucks out the old fluid, it would still be dark-ish. you have to understand that it is an old tranny. a new one, sure, pink. an old one, and how many miles does it have on it? if you are unsure, change it again. bet it will be an even lighter shade than it is now. you would need to use a lot of fluid to flush it out clean, and then you still would have a little darkness to the fluid color.

no not dumb. does it shift okay? no hesitation or slippage? if not, no worries. did you use synth oil or just regular oil? if poss, next time use a synth tranny fluid. crisper and a more firmer shift.

Seems to shift ok,bit of a whine in 1st on start away but that soon goes, which was the reason i done a flush.
using regular cheap stuff at the moment before i put synth in . Us poor old Brits cant afford to use Mobile 1 as a flushing fluid :)

They do sell Amsoil here @ $103 per gallon. It would be cheaper to park the car on the drive to look good, and get a Taxi everywhere . As for Wife,,s .......They do whine more with old age,but God in his wisdom made us get deafer, so the natural balance is restored

Dang and I thought $112 was expensive for the Redline I used when I exchanged my fluid. I would save up and get at least 14 quarts of transmission fluid and do it again. When you did the first exchange did you drop the pan and clean it?
When I did my 960 at 66K the fluid was black and smelled really bad.
My pan was coated with nasty brown sludge/coating.
If you didn't drop the pan and clean it before exchanging the fluid the new fluid stirred up that sludge in the pan. That is probably why the new ATF got dirty so quickly.

Must admit i did,nt drop the pan as it involved a fair bit of work
http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/Tran...#PanGasketLeaks
plus living on a steep road makes everything a bit more dangerous when jacking and crawling under the car. The only thing i want to fall on me thats Swedish would have blond hair and blue eyes :) although at 56 yrs old that would be kinda dangerous for me too :)
Flushed another 20 quarts through it the other day and if this looks ok in a couple of weeks time i will save up for some good synthetic ATF
