Ok this is probably a really stupid question but.. I have a 1991 940Se 2.0 non turbo. could anyone tell me if this car has a CAT if so what does it look like and where would it be?. I have looked under my car at the exhaust system and from the pics I have seen on the internet I can't seem to find one (cat) , but i'm not entirely sure what i'm looking for.

All help much appreciated.
Thanks

hello and welcome to the forum!!

You state that your car is a 1991 940. so it might not have a CAT. If you look on the front of the CAM cover ... you should see a sticker with a barcode and some writing on, the writing is going to start B200. it will have a letter after it such as K (denotes cat), E (no cat fuel injection), F (fuel injection), T (turbo) etc...

I would say, from owning both a 940 and a 740, both with 2 litre engines that you wouldnt have a CAT on your car. but there is still some chance.

get that engine code and i will tell you.

little bit of extra info from my knowledge bank:

All cars before 1992 (H plate and before) DO NOT legally have to have a CAT fitted to them in the uk, and they are exempt from emmisions test on the MOT too.

Cars registered between march 1992 (J Plate) and september 1992 (this will be on the V5c registration form ... don't have to have the cat in place but are subject to emissions tax BUT depending on how picky the MOT tester is he might fail it if it doesnt have a cat on.

all cars registered on/in after september 1992(K plate on) MUST have a CAT on to pass the MOT.

i have this on my favourites. i think it should be made a sticky too somewhere.

B= petrol engine
D= diesel

Numbers
Two numbers
cyl capacity (eg 21 = 2.1l) early block

Three numbers
1st two= cyl capacity
Third number
0= low friction block
4= low friction block with 4 valves per cyl

Four numbers
1st= No of cyls
Next two are capacity
Last= No of Valves per cyl

Suffix 1st letter
A= sidedraught carb
B= twin carb (but not on B30's)
E= injection
F= injection with Lambda and catalyser
G= injection with Lambda and no cat
K= downdraught carb
T= Turbo (diesel only)

Suffix 2nd letter(s)
ic= intercooler (diesels only)
T= Turbo
K= Light pressure turbo (K= Komfort)

Hence;
a D24Tic is a 2.4l intercooled turbo diesel
a B230FK is a low friction 2.3l LPT
a B21A is a 2.1l w/ single sidedraught carb
a B5234FT is a 5cyl 2.3l 20v catalysed turbo

cheers for that . I have 1 more question thats baffling me tho. I went to a website that sells full exhaust systems not sure if i can mention it here but anyway I typed in my car details including engine type and up came a picture of the full system broken down into the individual parts. Now it looks exactly the same as my system on my car but my car doesn't have the CAT section that is shown on the picture.

My car has 2 boxes , I asked a mechanic friend and he said that the CAT could be inside the middle box is this possible?

Thanks

no. the cat has to be very close to the engine. if you have a cat halfway up your car it will do nothing.

they very nature of a catalytic converter leads it to need to be extremely hot to produce the chemical reaction to clean up the emissions.

The converter will be sat right under the drivers seat of your car if you have one, and will be of oval type shape. the middle box is sat just under the back seat - then you have the over axle bridge and then your back box.

the system that you are viewing is probably what is called a de-cat system. By taking the cat out of the system, you increase the flow in the exhaust - the cat is really restrictive (at least 400 cells, compared to sports cats at 200 and 100).

As long as your within the legislation regarding cats on uk roads then your fine without it, just be aware that IF you car is meant to have one (which your engine code says it does) and your driving without one and you get stopped by traffic police/dvla and they check your car and find it to have no cat fitted (when its meant to have one) you can be fined a lot of money.
