Have 2001 V40 1.9T, was driving behind my hubby as he was driving the car home and noted puffs of black smoke under the car as he accelerated. Is this a know issue. I have not noted this before. Any idea where to start looking for issues. Not sure if it is an oil leek or another leek of some sort.
Any guidance would be great.

Under the Car at high load. Saw as he took off on the highway but not in town at low speeds.

Nope none. Have taken it to be looked at. They said the oil line coming out of the turbo was leaking. Hope that is it and I wont have to go back again.

Cracked down pipe, do you mean in the exhaust? It was E tested and it passed. It sounds the same to me but I have only been driving it for bit. I will admit that it runs louder then my other vehicle, but I just felt that it was because it is a different brand. Had a Pontiac Grand Prix before, not sure that is a good comparison. Is there a way to confirm that it is the pipe? I didn’t think to question the oil leak because there were some drips on the driveway. Maybe there are 2 issues. Ug.

Well it is back from getting the oil line fixed, we think that the guy who did it must of had an oil spill because there is oil everywhere now. But it is not leaking from the same spot any more. We will have to clean it up tonight and see if there is oil still leaking.

There was still puffs of blue not black ( my hubby was behind me this time ) smoke at high load, we will look again after getting most of the oil off. Hoping it was just because of all the oil. If not above it was indicated that it may be the down pipe. Any way to know that for sure, is there any where on line to get schematics of the motor and anything under the hood.

does it do it if you sit in the driveway and rev it in neutral? try it with the hood open to see where it is coming from, or scooch down and look under where the door meets the fender, just behind the front tire. on the drivers side. see if you see smoke from there. the down pipe is right there.

Nope this is not were the smoke is coming from. It is definitely the back of the motor area in the middle. It is still leaking oil since we have gotten it back and getting puffs of smoke when the turbo kicks in. Almost as if the oil is hitting something when we are driving and burning off. That seems to be the smells. The dealer is being great and has sent us to the Volvo dealer to diagnose where the oil leak is coming from. The engine light is on now also. I will keep you posted.
