guys and gals maybe abit of help or just direction in no start problem i'm having in 89 auto 245 with 277k.

with gas gauge near bottom, went to fill up and now car no start. no nothing, no clicks from battery at all. was able to get it to start once at station so i could get it back home, but now dead in water. nada.

have jumpered neutral safety switch by wiring across blue-blue yellow connector at trans hump. nada. exciter wire i found disconnected from alternator and have yet to connect, but have charged battery and still no go or even clicks from solenoid. would broken exciter wire at alt break start sequence? i know it causes battery to drain if not connected. but battery charged now and still no nothing.

cleaned battery posts and ground strap connection from battery to body. haven't done that to starter connections yet.

still feel it's something simple. thought it was neutral safety switch as i have had troubles with that in past. but bypass should make car start if so. how does one test if ignition switch bad?

so, where do i go next?

thanks guys and gals
gary c.

fixed! until i got some jackstands i couldn't get under car and look around. simple cause. just loose connectors at solenoid. and misplaced spade plug on same from ignition when i was fumbling around from above. all is well.

for now!

Where under your car was the problem located? Also is your car diesel or regular? My main question is; what does the solenoid and connections you mentioned look like from underneath (if I were looking at it from underneath the car) are they on right or left or middle side, are they closer to the front of the car or closer to middle? The reason I ask is I am having a similar problem, and just occured to me that it might be the same thing as yours, cause with all the shaking my engine does and all the fumbling around in there I've done, the same stuff might have come loose. Whatever info you can give me would be helpful so I can either fix it or continue with the process of elimination of what's not wrong.
Thanks, and congrats on finding the problem and fixing it.

starter is on drivers side below and behind the power steering pump. just follow the big red wires from battery downward. solenoid sits on top of starter. nut that holds big red wires to connection had backed off , leaving loose or no connection. took off wires and gave them shine with sandpaper and replaced.

no crank, no sound from solenoid might be neutral safety switch if auto( 89 245) like mine. the switch fails often. also, give battery posts and ground wire a look . and battery to see if above 12.6 volts. i knew it had to be connection or failed electric part as it gave no warning. poof.

lots more info than i know on various volvo websites and search engines. more info on problem might help others also.

good luck
gary
