Hi, i thought i'd put this question out to the experts out there, i have been told that to upgrade the turbo on a 1997 2.0t i can just bolt a t4 unit on, is this right? or is it a bit more involved than that? just wanted a bit more oomph, but dont want to part with the trusty steed yet

it is always more involved than that. you will need all the necessary items for the swap. head unit, downpipe, ecu, injectors, etc. have you tried to go to a stage 0, first? plugs, wires, filter, downpipe, etc. when you have done that, then you start with the exhaust, new injectors, ecu upgrade, chip. but also, then you will need brakes and suspension upgraded. can't have the go without the whoa. do the easy stuff first before you go opening a new can of worms. let your stock engine breathe and exhale better before you go for warp-speed in a single leap.

what mods? the stage 0? just get quality aftermarket parts, then go for stage1, but either way, you need to get the baseline straight before you start messing about. i don't car how much you spend on chips and turbos, if the base is not set straight i will blow pass you on the road while your car pukes all its innards out. get the base done first, then you build on it.
