my 92 940 has a strange noise thats goes on and off, it sounds like its in the engine, but it goes on with a click sound and imediatly turns off the same way, some times its a minute sometimes its near 5 minutes.

its a squeling noise near or around the timing belt/ front of motor, i checked the timing belt for the fun of it, but i realize it does it when something turns on intermitidly its not my a/c, p/s water pump or alt, i removed all belts it aint my timing for i had the cover removed.

it realing seems as if a soleniod or switch is engaging and it starts to make the noise, sounds like a high pitched rubbing noise, like when an air pump goes bad, but not sure if mine even has an air pump and if so not your typical engine driven pump.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

what do you mean by air pump?....

the only thing i could think of that would make a switching noise and squeal would be your alternator. On the back of the alternator there is a small black bosch device called a voltage regulator, this regulates the voltage to a constant 14v maximum regarding the rpm of the engine.

sometimes this can break down and stop working but i wouldnt have thought it would make the squealing noise.

when this squealing noise occurs does the car drop a few rpm's say on idle at 900 would it drop to like 750? noticeably straining?

also can you detect which side of the engine this noise is coming from, eg turbo side or inlet side... front of engine/rear of engine.

a little bell has just gone off in my head now, arent the oil pumps on these motors electrical?

well the alt belt was off and the noise persited...

but now you got me thinking about the oil pump, the noise sounds internal, as for were i'd say front/ front left.

there is no rpm drop, the car runs normal...

i like bells and whistles going off, but i dont like pistons and rods going off.

i'll check the oil pump next.

front, front left ... of the engine as you look at it. That would most likely be the water pump.

this has now sprung into my mind that could be possible. it would still work even with duff bearings, but would make hell of a noise. the way to test it would be (with engien off) take off the belt and see if you could turn it by hand.

This should be quite easy and free moving ... if it isnt then it is most likely the bearings have gone and are heating up.

Also i think if you have a fan on your motor (not electric) it could also be the fluid clutch on it. as these eventually wear out. The rotation of the engine spins the clutch around heating up the oil inside it and when the oil inside heats up it becomes thicker thus dragging the other side with it ... kind of like an automatic gearbox for an easier comparison...

try these.

well new t-belt, tensioner pully, water pump, all new hoses, seals, and head gasket including full tune-up (plugs, volvo wires and volvo cap, baster coil and fuel filter) had the head surfaced + pressure tested.

since i bought the car used roughly a few months ago with 138K on it i figured i'd go the whole nine yards and replace and fix the whole thing, the next thing to do is the oil pump and complete brakes. after that my car will be like new.

did all the work myself so i saved a bundle on it.

and all becuase of that dreaded pulley noise.

:liebe011: for the help mate.
