Hi All,

First time poster, hope you can help me out.

I have a 2004 s60 D5 Auto (163) with FSH with 45K on the clock. Back in November, When overtaking and coming up to the redline (just before automatic change up). I experienced a sudden power loss, ie, just enough to crawl into the hard shoulder, and the red triangle came on, with the message "engine management service needed - urgent" I took to the main volvo dealer, who said that no codes were found.

Its been fine until now, and has recently started doing it again, but only when driven hard. Accelerating hard to 4000rpm doesnt activate this problem, I am booking it back in to an independant specialist, but in anticipation of another "no fault code found" scenario, I would appreciate any advice, or have any of you had similar experiences?

Check the coolant level. I had similar problem and problem was that coolant level was a bit low.

I had a problem with my 2001 s60 2.4T when i accelerate hard the car cuts out. it felt like there was not enough air coming into the intake. after a while i got bad and started cuting out when you start to drive. after $2000 i had a new throttle body. the dealer told me that the problem was that my throttle body was going into limp mode because the throttle body was bad. most of the time you can clean the throttle body which can stop the car from cutting out at high rpm's

I got the same message you got system urgent service soon
the codes i got were
P0121 Throttle Position Sensor/Switch A Circuit Range/Performance Problem
P1237 Fuel Pump Secondary Circuit Malfunctio
I changed my plugs to dealer plugs and p1237 went away.

if you are good with taking apart your car try taking off your throttle boay and see if there is a dark build inside try cleaning it buy a throttle body cleaner and a new gasket if not get the dealer to clean it but it will cost you around $600.

also try upgradeing you software on you throttle body it will cost you around $60 for the software

iam not saying you should do any of these things but this is was the problem i gas with my car, and could be whats wrong with your car.

I think you should try the following:

1) Clean the throttle body,
2) disconnect and clean the terminals leading to the ETM, some contact spray or WD-40 would suffice
3) Remove the battery terminals from the battery and put them together for about 2 minutes to reset the computer

if the message reappears after driving, get the new software from your dealer, this will stop the loss of power, but the message may still come back.

The only thing left to do after all of that is to replace the Throttle Body (ETM), Usually if you see "Reduced Engine Performance" a code should be generated.

Let me know... I am at stage 3 myself, haven't replaced the ETM as yet, but I am driving with the message and I have no loss of power.
